Haggling/Deals in cycle shops?

Is this possible at all in Dublin? Going to be heading into Cycleways to get a Langster Steel in a few days, (for the price difference it's not really worth getting it from Evans). Would there be any chance of getting it for under the price-tag? Or getting a Brooks saddle thrown in for cheap?

Bikes seem like the kind of thing you should be able to haggle with.

From my experience with Cycleways they won't give you a discount on the price of the bike, but they will give you a discount (e.g. 10%) on any accessories you buy at the time. No harm in asking though...

No reason why you shouldn't be able to, nothing to loose from trying anyway. Some stores such as CycleSuperStore have deliberately high prices and then offer discounts to regular customers/ctw schemes trying to make the customers thing they're getting a great deal.

Worth finding out if the store accepts the One for All vouchers that are univerally accepted in alot of shops. Once you finalise on a price you can then tell them you'll either pay that price with the One for All vouchers or else if they give 5-8% off you'll pay in cash. Stores such as these that accept the One for All vouchers have to pay 10% to the company to redeem their value therefore cash offers a cheaper way for them to do business. If you come to a compromise of 6 or 7% discount then you both gain by avoiding the vouchers.

Well I'm looking at getting a Brooks saddle and a Charge track bar, so maybe I could get all three for €650 or something...

in my experience cycleways (cycles away?) is they dont do discount, some crap about cameras and being on the corner and getting scumbags nicking stuff regularly.

    whatever their loss

Cyclogical are a different story though.

Cyclogical don't stock Specialized. If they'd gimme a Pista for €615 I'd be very happy, highly doubt it though, so a Langster it is.

I don't see why you shouldn't at least try. I think it's an Irish thing that people feel embarrassed about it. Just imagine yourself as Delboy or that guy off wheeler dealers and go for it.

I know a few places (possibly Cycleogical included, wouldn't surprise me) don't take kindly to people mentioning online sources for leverage. Just walk in and say you can offer them 600 cash right now for a Pista and see what happens or say you are going elsewhere. Maybe they will bite, maybe not...

EDIT: When I bought my Orion in Cycleogical I didn't know squat but a friend told me a few things he would change: swap out the Gossamer crankset for an Ultegra compact and get a set of Aksiums instead of the Fulcrum 7s. It was more or less a like for like swap excluding the cost of labour. They initially said "free" but quickly changed it to "50 euro extra". In hindsight I should have said "eh no, free will be fine", but I think if you are getting parts swapped around you should push them on the haggling.

yeah this a MAJOR faux pas, the LBS will never be able to compete with online stores on retail price, its like rubbing their nose in it. Not recommended

Cycleways gave me a great discount. Down from 1300 to 1090 on my cannondale. 150 discount as it was the last one they had, then I pushed for an extra 60 as the other bike I wanted was 1090. The agreed but insisted on giving me store credit instead of cash - but when I walked in with my C2W paperwork they just knocked the last 60 off the price.

Id say give it a go. They seem pretty sound in there.

so what on-line sites would you recommend ?? have a nice giant hybrid i bought in sean duffs a few years ago but wouldn't mind picking up something slightly sportier for spins at the weekends.

Evans is the one I've used before, they have great deals in the sales, on last year's models etc.

If you have bought a bike in Cycleways and they have your details, always ask for a customer discount. They will look you up on their system (usually your mobile no.) and give you 10% off. I even got an extra 10% off sale price when I bought some Spesh shoes and other items in their sale last Dec.

Evans, Chainreactioncycles, Wiggle (I bought my singlespeed here)...there might be more online shops in the wiki.

Hi, new to this forum (I usually use others) but for what it's worth, I've bought a lot of stuff from CRC - www.chainreactioncycles.com - they're delivery is free and if you want to try before you buy, they're in a wee place called Dough (say it as Doke) just outside Belfast. Good luck.

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm? Seriously - only trying to help - I am new to this forum. Found out from a nice guy on bikeradar.:o

Your best bet if looking for a discount is to offer cash.

My grandad - a pretty canny businessman, apparently - used to use the 'Well, I can pay you in full at the end of the month, or I can give you this much cash now' line when settling his accounts with the local shops (back when people had accounts at local shops!), and the 'cash now' option was usually accepted.

And when I was getting my Raleigh Banana in Tony Kealy's in Walkinstown in, um..., 1989 (?) (), I remember my dad asking politely if there was a cash price on the bike. There was.

I'm not saying this'll work in any shop, but it's worth a try. Ready cash now vs payment by credit card in a few weeks- many retailers would probably be glad of the money asap.

Or, as others have said, you might just get a deal on some accessories.
