Slope Rating

I'm not long back from the PGA Catalunya which is one of the courses I have seen that has a Slope Rating applied to the course. I don't know of any course in Ireland that has these ratings, or one that uses them, but I have lived in Germany and France, and most courses there do have them. Does anybody know if any courses in Ireland use them? And if not, why not?

Slope rating is for handicap systems using the USGA rules as far as I know, the amount of extra shots you get on a course is based on your handicap and the course slope rating

I know it was introduced by the USGA, but it's in use across Europe.

It's not used in any course in the UK and Ireland afaik, although you can find the slope rating on the card of some courses that have regular American visitors, e.g. Ballybunion, Waterville etc.
In the UK and Ireland we simply opted for a different system and more info about it can be found here http://www.congu.com/home.asp.

Most other countries in Europe (other than Ireland and UK) have handicap system based on the USGA rules

Did a project before in college comparing both the USGA and Irish handicaps systems. Ours was the fairest..........:)
Forget the ins and outs of it now but I might see if I can dig it out and give it a read over again...

I believe the GUI are going around courses in Ireland now and over the next while to calculate slope ratings. They are hoping to introduce it in the next few years.

Alot of the more popular courses have a slope rating for quite some time now, to accommodate our US and European visitors.
It's been said that we (CONGU) are going to be using the slope system in the next 18 months, I'm not sure that's going to happen in that time frame, but it will almost certainly be here within 5 years.

"It" being the USGA handicap system?

Or dear lord, if that happens I'm moving to Mexico.

There are no plans to bring it in to Ireland. The EGA tried to convert all of Europe to the same handicap system as the USGA. As a result most of Irelands courses calculated or given a slope rating. If you ask your pro he should know what is the slope rating. Unfortunately COGNU had other ideas so they broke away. So on the 1st of Jan 2000 the EGA implemented the slope rating handicap system to Mainland Europe.
That's how I understand it there might be room for improvement on that explanation.

It's actually a very good system, and would obviously be tweaked for use over here, i.e no casual rounds, mulligans etc.

I heard different and it would tie in with the philosophy that given the game is global that one system of handicapping and rules should/would be in use worldwide.
If you look at the history of the CONGU system, when it was been set up initially it was only the English golfing union that wanted to use our current CONGU system, Ireland, Scotland and Wales all favored the slope system, but essentially the English Golf Union pushed it through and as the largest of the CONGU unions their voice carried more weight at the time.
