Sorry for the title - I ran out of space.
The University has had three different names:

in 1849 it was called Queen's College Galway
In 1908 it was changed to University College Galway
in 1997 it was changed again to National University of Ireland, Galway
    So what next?

The National University of Ireland won't be around in the near future so will NUI, Galway change its name?

The University President has already publicly stated that the NUIG won't be changing it's name again after the NUI is disbanded.

University Collage Galway (UCG) would suggest that we are a part of a larger federal university system, which we would not if we are going to be completly independent. so it would probably be unlikely that it would be called UCG again if they do decide to change the name.:)

    No it would'nt.
Galway would denote the location to avoid confusion with University College Osaka

West of Ireland university sounds about right:

From reading that it looks like NUIG and UL are more or less merging.
