A neighbor of mine had a High Court case about a year ago against a gov agency. the case lasted about 12-14 days!!
what I'm trying to find out is how long should it have taken for a ruling from the judge to be published or if it was settled after
the case but before the judge ruled. would there be any information on what happened
I have checked Courts.ie judgments and can't find any information about the case.

    Thanks

shaneybaby thanks for the link, I found the case i'm looking for but there is no information listed about it under (Case Details, Filings, Order, Listing, Judgment)
I know that the case was heard (I was there for over 6 days of it) am I missing something? should it not have more information on the site about what happened and should their not be a judgment after a year or a listing of a settlement?

    Thanks

If the case was in fact listed and you found it, and you say it was heard before a judge, there will most certainly have been information under 'Filings' and 'Listing'. There may or may not be under 'Orders' but it is safe to say it would be an unusual case in the High Court which did not have some orders made before coming on for trial.

Aside from that strangeness in this case, as a matter of general information not all cases lead to a written judgment.

If the case settled there may not be any Order of the Court dealing with the final outcome.

You would therefore be limited to asking the parties what happened, or looking for newspaper reports.

Some settlements are of course confidential and cannot lawfully be disclosed.

I 99% sure i did find the right case as both the two Plaintiff Name and the Defendant Name are right.
And I know it was heard before Justice Mary Laffoy.
The Attorney General was a notice party to the case (would that make any difference)?
there is no information under Filings or Listing?
would it take more that a year for a ruling on a case (it was a very long court hearing)
If there was a settlement and it had a confidential clause in it, would one of party's be at least allowed to say they had settled the case out of court without braking the agreement. ie:no information on the settlement
the start of the case was in the papers but then there was no more information in any of the papers, which I thought was weird as there seemed to be interest in the case.

    Thanks

I don't know if you have the right case (sounds like you do if it has the same parties and judge).

It can indeed sometimes (rarely) take such a long time for a ruling on a given case.

If it was settled on a confidential basis then usually the fact of the settlement and its terms are confidential; no harm in asking though.

i think you're actually looking for the written judgment itself are you?

the link i gave only has the information regarding the dates, i.e. when an affidavit went in, if and when a judgment was issued. You can't actually see the judgment itself. You would have to ask the solicitors from either side i'm afraid (as far as i know the courts service don't dish out judgments to third parties not included in the proceedings, open to correction) or just wait and hope it has gets issued in a law journal.

If a written judgment was given it will appear on the Courts website and also in the WJHC or WJSC series which are available ito the public in various libraries - trinity college will issue a readers pass for theirs for instance - and readily accessible.

The point is that the vast, vast majority of High Court cases do not result in a written judgment.

While many High Court cases do not result in written judgments, the High Court search facility on the Courts Service website will still tell you if there has been a final order. In practice (and depending on the judge), it can often take a very long time for the decision to be made: sometimes well over a year.

The simplest way is to ask your neighbour the outcome of the case.

    thanks everyone for your input.
I had asked my neighbor and they said they were still waiting for a judgment
As it has been over a year and a half I thought there should have been a judgment by now,
turns out from what people are saying it can take this long. I just thought there
might have been legal reasons why they could not say what happened.
