So the rules are, uncapped but playing somewhat regularly. So basically this isn't a 15 where the likes of Macken and Conway are included.

    1.Wilkinson
    2.Cronin
    3.Ross
    4.Touhy
    5.Toner
    6.Faloon
    7.Pollock
    8.Henry
    9.O'Donaghue
    10.Humphries
    11.Carr
    12.McFadden
    13.Cave
    14.D.Kearney
    15.Felix Jones

    Can't see Toner making it.

Some of those have caps from USA/Canada, and Cronin has one from Fiji, dont they?

    Caldwell for you then?

Touhy has really impressed me this season, he even looked decent at six on friday. Wouldn't be stunned to see him in an Irish match 22 this season.

Thought Toner played very well for the Wolfhounds. What is it about him that you can see him making it?

Definitely a tad harsh. Hes 22. Not many had even heard of McLaughlin last year and at 24 hes made his debut in the 6 Nations and is first choice for Leinster.
Toner needs gametime. It's a shame Leinster brought in Hines because I do remember there was a time when Toner was putting in magnificent performances for Leinster, hes regressed slightly.

He looked like a serious prospect last season. Still lacks physicality though and is a tad illdisciplined, needs games.

Caldwell is in the same boat and is going to get even less game time next seaon with Mullers arrival.

One or both of them should head to Connacht or abroad.

He definitely needs more game time to develop but I thought he put in a more physical performance on Friday than usual. Was making good progress last year, even got a Heinekin Cup MOTM I seem to remember but has had little opportunity this season. I wouldn't call him indiciplined in general though.

Touhy has been excellent for Ulster and really has made great stides this season though.

No I'm not questioning that he throws himself into it its more that he doesn't make as much impact as you'd expect from a man his size.

When Cheika signed Hines I expected him to play at 6 a fair bit but McLaughlins transformation put paid to that and Toners prospects.

He seems to be behind both O Kelly and Hogan at this stage

I do see what you are saying. I think more game time would help to toughen him up somewhat as he is still quite young and looks it. If he can get it, I think by the time he is 25 he would be coming into him prime.

If Ireland had to play an uncapped (excluding USA/Canadian caps) team tomorrow i would put this out.

    Wilkinson
    J. Fogarty (Im guessing 10 minutes vs. Fiji rules out Cronin)
    Ross
    Touhy
    Toner
    Muldoon
    Pollock
    Henry
    F. Murphy
    Humphries
    Carr
Matthews (prefer Cave but Matthews is playing v. well atm)
    McFadden
    Hurley
    Jones

    D. Fogarty
    D Hurley
    Hogan
    Faloon/Ronan
    O'Donaghue
    Keatley
    Cave/Whitten

He just doesn't tackle well, he has a general awkwardness that he may grow out of.

Definitely think Ian Dowling would be on this team

How about James Downey, Northampton centre. As far as I am aware he has not been capped. In fine form in the GP and should be in the Ireland set up

Good form but, this is his greatest form ever and the peak of it! He was useless with Munster, Leinster and Connacht.

    15. Felix Jones
    14. Johne Murphy
    13. Fergus McFadden
    12. James Downey
    11. Fionn Carr
    10. Ian Humphreys
    9. Frank Murphy
    1. Brett Wilkinson
    2. John Fogarty
    3. Declan Fitzpatrick
    4. Dan Tuohy
    5. Damien Browne
    6. Chris Henry
    7. Willie Faloon
    8. James Coughlan

no he wasnt, he never got a run at Leinster to be considered useless, his season at Connacht was punctuated by long spells on the sideline and the decision of a certain coach to play him right wing, when fit and playing he did well. He spent 3 months at Munster after which Kidney offered him a longer deal but he chose to go to Italy where he'd get game time rather than be warming the Munster bench.
He's injury free now and getting a run of games and his talent is shining through.

How do you know it is the peak of it? You could say the same about Hurley surely. He was crap for years, but he is playing well now. By that logic, we could say that it is irrelevant that Hurley is playing well for Munster now, as playing badly before means we must ignore him forever.

No, not in the slightest. He's utterly useless.

You think he's better than Carr, Murphy, Hurley?

johne murphy has been forgotten. definately would start!!!

Now that's a bit harsh on him. If he was "useless", he wouldn't be playing professional rugby.

When he is on form, he is a solid player. He has good basics, is deceptively strong and is an excellent defender. The lad is a valuable squad player for Munster.

He just lacks the pace of a true winger.

In an Ireland context, there are many wingers out there superior to him.

Useless is probably a bit harsh.

I think my main problem is, through no fault of his own, he gets picked ahead of better wingers (eg Carr) so I get a little bit excited in my criticism.

There's really no such thing as a useless pro player. At least there shouldn't be.

His problem's just, to use a rugby cliché, a fairly limited skillset. He's good at what he does, but there's not much he does do.

And in fairness to him, defensively, Dowling's fairly epic.

when picked he plays a decent role in a Munster team not known for spinning the ball out wide too often, he's a decent defender and his head never drops. However i'd take any of Kearney, Keating, Conway, Carr ahead of him....

plus one small matter that i dont think has been mention.....he got 2 caps last summer!!!

I heard rumblings of bringing both himself and Clarke into the Saxons set up, nothing concrete but I wouldn't be surprised. He's in the Tindall/Noon/Hipkiss(are they all 13's who should be playing 12?) mould the the English managers find hard to ignore

.. if he were not already capped ? Did he not pick up 2 Summer 2009 ?

The OP stated that he would like the Summer tour caps disregarded for this selection as their was No Lions' or Leinster players available.

Well with Ian Dowling out wide would you bother spinning it wide? Rhetoric here, but ya see my point. He's like football's defensive striker. Not a contradiction in terms, merely a specific and spectacularly dull evolution. :P
