Driving through the Sally gap today over the Wicklow mountains, hit a bad pot hole and felt car bottom out. Got out a checked damage and found the sump had cracked (I'm sure the sally gap claims many sumps every year!).

Spoke to a mechanic and he claims the seat toledo oil sump is the same as the passat, leon and a4 diesel engine and that all you need is an allen key to change it.

Has anyone ever changed one and is it easy enough to do. I have to do this first thing in the morning and then try to get to work before lunch!

Theres a couple of allen key bolts on the gearbox side that are kind of awkward. Apart from that it's fairly straight forward.

cheers, will i be able to get at all the allen bolts with a straight allen key or will in need an allen key with a ball end to get at some of them? Any idea how much its going to cost me for one at the motor factors in the morning?

Would definitely be easier with a ball end allen key. Theres also a few bolts going into the gearbox housing as well. I think they're 13mm and 15 mm.

Not quite sure of the price but they're not expensive.

Youll have to check if it has an oil level sensor though because theres two different types. You'd be better to give them the engine code just to be sure.

was it leaking when u cracked it? did u drive it home?

yip it was leaking whole way home. not too worried about the engine running dry because theres about 2-3 liters of oil on the road now outside so it got home ok.

Would you not have put something under to catch the oil?

The engine is not the same as the passat or a4, these are longitudinal mounted engines and I'm 99% sure the sump is different.

Your transverse mounted engine would be the same as the leon, golf, a3 and octavia.
