Belkin N1 Vision wireless

Hi all.
Got a Belkin N1 Vision wireless modem N router for €36 at PC World Sligo. Other stores may have them too ... reduction of over €110.
Whether it's worth it or not - don't know yet ... I hope it's better than the other 5 wireless routers I've tried to punch through the walls of this concrete bunker. Looks cool though so I may sit in the room and just gawp at it.

Well just make sure that your laptop or pc wireless card can support N draft speeds, otherwise there is not much point in replacing existing G routers.

True!

I actually had quite a few problems with this router, used to drive me mad and took up several several hours of "troubleshooting".
Every so often it would decide not to let a few of the computers not to connect.
Trust me, a truly random problem.
Eventually it just decided itself to work, needless to say I just never went near it again when it started working

That was just my experience of it, I could have just got a bad one though.

Draft N, it just dictates the maximum speed and range of a router. As I said above you need a N-enabled wireless card to get full speed.

But see here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/126821/wireless_routers_the_truth_about_superfast_draftn.html so it would appear that its not all what its cracked up to be!

Got one of these ~3 months ago for €140. Works well. Decent range. Can be set up to work on b networks if want. €36 is a good price for any kind of router but for this spec is excellent.

You'll still only get G speeds with a G device. So unless you've got or are planning on getting an N device, you may as well keep your current router.

I'm pretty sure that the Belkin N1 is just an wireless N router.

No WAN Modem. This would be needed separate or the old one which is then pointless.

What if you have a cable modem? or could you just plug an ASDL modem in to the belkin?

The modem your link refers to is the Belin N+, whereas the one discussed in this thread is the Belkin N1 Vision.

Had a N1 vision and had noting but problems with it crashing when more than 2 wireless devices were connected at once.


In the end Belkin sent me out the new N+ router and Gigabit switch, not as nice to look at (No Screen) but a few months on and problems are solved thank goodness.

hmmm, i've been looking for a good wireless router to replace my current ancient bt wired router + cheap wireless bridge. Is this an all in one router and modem or just a wireless extender?

I would like to echo the problems of Belkin routers with the PS3. Avoid at all costs if you plan on using one.

Shame that PC World doesn't seem to be consistent around the Isle - there were two of these in Sligo on Saturday, I had one, the sales assistant (when seeing the price) had the other ... there had been more than two on the shelves before I got there. They also had several wireless modem routers from €10 to €40 some including a wireless usb dongle.
The model I purchased is the modem integrated N1 MIMO vision router (prod code 0000857072 BKN N1 Vision ADSL). It is shrink wrapped and brand new. Coverage experiments start over the next few evenings. Fingers crossed.:rolleyes:

only one thing I don't like about it so far - the aerials (3) cannot be removed and replaced with extension lead and higher gain wand ... thus stuffing my ideas of extending to the garage for internet radio on the laptop - probably have to CAT5 that area - damn!

I'd say you'd do that with a soldering iron and about 500 how to's from the Web?

I also had all sorts of NAT problems with the XBOX and PS3 with this router, gives moderate NAT on XBOX and drops connection to the PS3 too frequently, I now use this router http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=337363 and connect 3 XBOX's, Wii and a PS3 aswell as PC's with no issues, all open NAT or type2 on the PS3. HTH. Had to upgrade the firmware straight out of the box on the Dlink.

I think PC World do refurbished or previously returned items. That could explain how OP's router was so cheap. I was in there recently for a new router, both G type. picked 2 off the shelf to get prices. One was significantly cheaper as it was a returned item.

OP has already said it was still in shrink wrap, so I'm assuming it was brand new !

Yeah guys. It was brand new and marked on the shelf. There were loads of modem routers on the whole rack but only two of these left so I grabbed it. There were people looking at other N1 routers on the main shelves who walked right past these. I go into PCW, look for a bargain and get it without question, they let you take it back if it's not right. A few weeks ago I got 1Gb pc2700 sodimm for €35 (1/2 price and still too expensive imo), 500Gb network HD for €32 along with minor bits too. Perhaps they're only local manager specials (?). Sligo has Network HD mediastorage units (no HD) for €14 - didn't get those as they're IDE and just bought the 500Gb one. Maybe it's a Sligo thing - Lord knows we need something up here to make us smile ...
