    Hey folks,

Quick q on Churchtown test route, have a test coming up soon. Is most, or at least a lot, of the driving you'll do generally in housing estates? It doesn't matter but I'm just curious, it seems to be the case anyway.

Any tips in general you have for this route let us know!

    Cheers

Like a lot of test routes, part of the test will take you through housing estates, but there's a fair amount of driving on main roads as well. It might be a good idea to take a few pre tests with an ADI, and they'll give you a good idea of the various routes where you may be brought on the day.

I'm not sure about main roads or estates but there's one hill in particular that's a very very common one for hill starts and it's a proper hill.

I think it's called Woodside Drive and I'd practise it if you haven't driven around the area before. :)

the hill at the dropping well pub in milltown is the other favoured hill for hill starts.........in terms of reversing around a corner (don't know if they still do that but if they do)...there is a small cul de sac at the top of the dropping well hill in on your left as you go up....practice there and up at the hillside drive estate as well- also your 3 point turns have been known to be asked for at these sites too...in terms of overall routes, get familiar with driving down orwell road, and the surrounding link roads leading back up to churchtown, bramor road, milltown, nutgrove avenue (speaking of which, there's another reverse around a corner site at the first left after the fire brigade station...watch your speed limit- it's 60kmph on most of the roads I mentioned above ....hope that helps...

It's not 60km/h anywhere around Churchtown or Milltown AFAIK and I drive there everyday. 50km/h everywhere unless marked otherwise.

Get there early to get a parking space. With that super value there and a lot of OAPs in the area it can be a nightmare to get a parking spot. The famous hillstart for that route is the one at the start of woodside drive, off the braemor road into the castle golf club. Remember the really sharp bend in the road as you come to the castle golf club; get down to second gear to take it. Also if he brings you up Whitebarn road to the juction with nutgrove avenue be careful not to enter the buslane as you turn right; and be careful not to enter if you can't clear the yellow box in front of the fire station after the turn.

The three cul-de-sacs on Beech Lawn off the Barton road are the usual places where they get you to do the reverse maneuver. They might bring you up Meadow Grove after the reverse; this is a very narrow road with cars parked all along the left lane. If a cars approaches while you are driving along pull in half a car length into a gap to let them pass; remember to signal and observe before pulling out again!

There are loads of stops signs in these estates so remember to come to a complete stop when you reach the line. Watch your progress on these estate roads: you still need to be reaching 45-50kph or you will be marked. Remember to get a few lessons on the route with your ADI. Good luck you will be fine!
