    Noticing this a lot lately.

Big dirty hockers, and not just from kids, grown men and women () also. Were talking on busy pedestrianised streets. The worst is when you hear them gearing up for it..
Should be fined for this stuff..absolute height of ignorance.

Once it doesn't hit somebody I don't give a ****. Public urination is a bigger problem in fairness.

Yeah but do you want to step in someones dirty green phlegmmy spit?

    It also spreads diseases.

It's a filthy thing to do, they should be made lick it off the ground afterwards imo.

Yeah it's absolutely sick, can't understand why people do it all the time, i mean you see people do multiple times just walking down the street, for no apparent reason. Scummers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Riddle101

Yeah I don't like spitting either, but I would say smokers get a lot of flem in their throats and need to spit once in a while. I don't know I just always noticed smokers spitting. I honestly don't get spitting though, i'm mean i see a lot of kids spit like 10 times for some reason, and I just think they do it because it makes them feel like their hard and tough or something. I would expect spitting from a kid but from an adult it's different, to me it's somewhat disrespectful.

I don't mind spitting that much if it's outdoors in the right place (if for some reason i have a big ball of phlegm i'd rather not swallow it so i'll try and find a drain or something- i'd never spit right in the middle of the street). It's when people do it indoors or on a bus (as some guy was doing yesterday) that it pisses me off .

Hate walking in front of someone and then you hear them trying to hock something up, makes my stomach turn.

Meh , some people are never happy. The minute you got her to swallow you'd be looking for a gargling performance.

Should be givin' the same fine you get for taking a piss in public/throwing a cigarette butt/spitting chewing gum onto the ground IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,185 ✭✭✭Tchaikovsky

Hmmm, perhaps we should ban it.... yes, that always works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭BluesBerry

Its disgusting I hate to see people do it

My grandmother told me once that spitting was banned in public because of TB and other dieseses and people got heavily fined if they were caught

Spitting into a drain ain't all that bad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,857 ✭✭✭Valmont

If I need to hock one up, I will. Although I usually place them on the road or in a corner. I wouldn't want to walk on a big green one.

Saw a guy (30s at least) hawking up a big one last week. He spat it on to the windscreen of a parked car. Walked into a nearby shop with a big smile on his face. It was early enough in the morning and he probably thought nobody would see him. Nasty thing to do.

I've seen some people do it indoors of a bar/club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,088 ✭✭✭NoDice

No lie, I was walking to the bus stop this morning and as I was walking up a side street near Hill Billies, a staff fella spat from the entrance door and just about missed my leg! I nearly got sick! I heard it hit the ground! Ugh!!

Also shudder when I see rugby/soccer players spit during a match on tv. Yuck yuck yuck.

Is it not illegal to spit in a public place in this country ever since the days of TB?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,115 ✭✭✭✭bnt

Call me elitist, but I view someone's "on street" behaviour as a strong indicator of their social standing. It's not just spitting: if I see someone on a street shouting, getting drunk, showing too much skin, having arguments, or generally being obnoxious, that is someone I do not want to know. There's a place for all that stuff, and it's not the street.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Discreet spitting I have little problem with; it's the blatant "I don't give a **** gollier in full view" that really is pathetic. I spit every so often, but I am aware of my surroundings and wouldn't do it in full view of others who may get queasy.

where is this magical place for street shouting etc. if its not the street?

Sometimes you just gotsta spit, which i think is fine as long as you are aware of your surroundings and not blatant about it. I always try to direct it towards a wall or shop window so that nobody steps on it.

The big hock hock phlegmy ones do turn my stomach though.

I know someone who spits every ten to twenty seconds when walking down the street. I think it's disgusting, but I've never said anything. He's not a smoker. Is there any medical reason why someone would have so much excess saliva?
