Is Terry Watt from Derry the highest grade in ireland?

    What grade is he?

If it's not Terry who is it?

A well deserved promotion for a great Judo man! It's just a shame the reporting of the event has mostly been so crap. IMO the use of the term "pensioner" is stupid and disrespectful. 72 isn't even old for this rank.

There are a few 6 Dan holders in Ireland, so unless Terry Watt is a 7 Dan he's not the single highest but one of the highest.

Was Charlie Hegarty, now deceased, the first Irishman to be awarded 6 Dan? Off the top of my head I can think of Jack Dennis, Harry McGuigan and Paul Cummins as Irish 6 Dan holders.

Is it a Kodokan recognised 10th dan or one like Palmers?

Just checked there. Terry is a 7th Dan

Guys I've emailed the IJA and asked them to provide us with any information (past & present) on who holds the highest grade in Ireland (including Northern Ireland).

    I'll post up their reply.

Cool, so my guess is he's the highest! :D

George Kerr's rank was awarded by the IJF, like the 10 Dan awards of Charles Palmer and Anton Geesink.

The hightest Kodokan rank held by a non-Japanese is 8 Dan and that has only ever been granted to three men as far as I know.

Harry McGuigan is 6th Dan isn't he? I think Jack Denis is too. What promotion did Paul Cummins get last time?

Within the Irish Judo Association the answer is as follows:

    6th Dan shared by

Jack Dennis - Lusk Judo Club
Harry McGuigan - Renbukan Judo Club
Ciaran Ward - Yamakwai Judo Club
Paul Cummins - UCD Judo Club/Paul Cummins School of Judo

within the NIJF I believe the answer is as follows:

    7th Dan

    Terry Watt

    Regards
    Deirdre
