Is there a specific structure when you are asked to write an email in the French exam?

All we've done is formal letters and I know you get marks for layout but looking through the papers emails seem to come up more often...

An email is something similar to a letter you would write to a friend or family member. So its taking the informal layout.

location and date on the top right, next line far left your opener, Salut Luc, Mamam et Papa, Ma chere Marie.. and then off you go.
