"Italian national director and former Paris-Roubaix winner Franco Ballerini, 45, died in Larciano, Italy, this morning due to injuries suffered in a rally car race.

Ballerini co-piloted a rally car driven by Italian Alessandro Ciardi when they went off course and crashed around 8:30. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, both were taken to a hospital near Pistoia, but Ballerini died despite the help of medics."

I read that yesterday, so sad as he was one of my favourites. An animal on the cobbles (legs like tree trunks) and the opposition Duclos-Lassalle, Museeuw, Van Petegem,Tafi and Tchmil etc were all class acts. In fact Duclose-Lassalle pipped him on the line in 1993 but he went on to win it twice after that. A Paris Roubaix legend as Slideshowbob said and Kelly was a big fan. RIP
