Right - my first macbook got cracking on both sides of the trackpad and on both sides of the keyboard.

I was going to send it in to get fixed as I was told I was entitled too - but the macbook got tea spilled on it and got replaced under the insurance so I didn't bother.

Do you think I would get anywhere by asking apple do give me a new polycarbonate case or the unibody aliminium

not the upgraded machine - but the macbook guts in a new case because I am sick of it cracking - it is the one problem with the machine.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Unfortunately they can't put your computer's innards into the unibody case because the case was designed to fit the components. The battery, the ram etc are different.

No, they are not "Customer installable parts"

Ok - thanks for the responses.

How long does it take them to replace the plastic case because of cracking - altho when i get it replaced it will crack again in a while I thinks its worth fixing.

    Ah cool, thanks.

Do you reckon they could give me a black case? - i have a white macbook.

cracks, always but at least the black one wont smudge as easy.

Seeing as there was a €200 price difference, its doubtful.

    well yeah who wouldnt.

I only want the case - not the parts that are extra obviously.

with this cracking issue, they only replace the 'top case' which is the plastic around the keyboard and track pad.

I've had my fair share of problems with macbooks and macbook pros. 8 replacements of the course of 18 months, all from one purchase (so i basically only had one laptop). I'm not getting into all the problems as i'd practically be able to write a book but I got the first one replaced after two days, that one repaired 8 months later and the repair didn't work so it was sent back and still couldn't be fixed so I hassled them into replacing, from then on it was every few months and I point blank refused to get them repaired, and wouldn't back down until they agreed to replace the machine with a higher spec model (hence the macbook and macbook pro's...) by the time of the 7th replacement I talked them into giving me a brand new 24" 2.8Ghz iMac, then the laptop broke and i just went for a straight swap as it was the high end 15" and i had had the 17" and it was to big. I had dealt with the same really nice Irish guy from the 2nd replacement. If you start mentioning law's and acts, all they say is "if you would like to legally challenge apple, please have your lawyer contact our legal team" so I would advise not using specific words, but tell them in some other way that they must do x y or z.

all ended last january and bar a HD replacement in the iMac its all working fine :)
