The pounding of my feet was keeping time with the beating of my heart. Amsterdam's famous red lit shop windows sped by as sleazy strangers and drunk tourists turned to look. i didn't care, i just kept running. In my mind i knew they weren't following. They didn't need to, they had what they wanted now. I just needed to get away, away from that place and those....people. My heavy breathing soon evolved into a chesty wheeze forcing me to a stop. I gulped the cool night air in sharply, the oxygen soothing my aching muscles. My surroundings began to come into focus. I was leaning up against a bridge railing overlooking one of the city's famous canals. I was on the outskirts of the red-light district now, the infamous area in the heart of Amsterdam. About three miles away in that dingy apartment my captors were probably still celebrating obtaining the last piece of the jigsaw. It would be morning before they realized i had tricked them and for that reason i could afford to rest, however briefly. The last week had passed in a haze of parties, pub crawls and clubs. This college trip was supposed to celebrate getting my medical degree with my classmates, a week to cherish for the rest of my life. It was yesterday, the day before i was due to return home that things began to turn nasty. All my life i knew i was in constant danger because of who i was and more importantly who my family were. I tried to live a normal life and did so successfully untill now. I wasn't proud of the secret i hid, but i had to put my family before my conscience. They thought they had finally succeeded in achieving a lifetimes dream when i told them. Even now the murdering bastards were probably dreaming about their revenge. But what they knew was all wrong and that would soon be clear to them. Somewhere in the distance the bell of Amsterdam's old church broke the evening's silence.Time to move. With a renewed sense of energy i straightened myself up and prepared to put more ground between them and i. Taking a last look around i was sorry i couldn't enjoy this beautiful old city as gentle snow began to transform it into a fairy tale land. Soon i was running again. I didnt know where i was going. In fact at that point in time i knew very little about anything anymore. Getting out of Holland was all that was important now, but i knew i couldn't go home either. Their people would be waiting for me. There was only one thing for sure, i couldn't hide from my past any longer.
