I have been discussing Irish P4P All Time Greats on another boxing website and was wondering what you guys think of this list. There are a couple of rules to this list:

    1) Fighters must be born on the Island of Ireland.

    2) Fighters must have grown up in Ireland and fought in Ireland at some stage of their career.

    3) The above rules out the likes of Jimmy McLaurin, George Gardner or the Irish American's like Suillivan, Corbett etc.

    4) Fighter must now be retired.

    So here's the list:

1 Rinty Monaghan..............Won the world flyweight title in 1947

2 Barry McGuigan...............Won the WBA featherweight championship in 1985

3 Dave McAuley.................Won IBF Flyweight Champion

4 Mike McTigue..................Won the World light - heavyweight title in 1923

5 Wayne McCullough...........Won the WBC bantamweight title in 1995

6 Steve Collins...................Won the WBO middleweight title in 1994 and the WBO super - middleweight title in 1995

7 Johnny Caldwell...............Won the world bantamweight title in 1961

8 Tom Sharkey...................Won a fight billed as the world title in 1896 but never held the title.

9 Peter Maher....................Won a fight billed as the world title in 1895 but never held the title.

10 Eamonn Loughran...........Won the WBO welterweight title in 1993

Any opinions and suggestions on the list would be appreciated.

    A. Are you from Belfast?

    B. Are you Eamonn Loughran?

No, I'm not from Belfast I'm sitting here in Dublin. I'm just trying to find out the best of the Irish that were born and grew up here. It's just a list thats a bit different from those that include Suillivan, Corbett, Dempsey etc. There's nothing wrong with those lists by the way.

Eamonn Loughran sneaked in as he was a world champ with 5 defences although it was the WBO title that wasn't highly regarded at the time. The No.10 spot was a struggle so please any alternative suggestions are welcome.

I don't have a Belfast bias I just think these are the best fighters. Please rearrange the list to what you think is right. I am looking for opinions.

Maybe I should have phrased it better. How about "P4P Greatest Irish Fighters Born and Bred in Ireland".

Just did a quick google and wiki there on sharkey and Maher. Why are they not widely recognised as world champs when Corbett never won the title afterwards anyway? seems a bit odd.

It looks like Corbett retired and in doing so vacated the title. Maher won the vacant title in 1895 and challenged the retired Corbett but no fight was made. Then lost to Fitzimmons, who lost to Sharkey in 1896 and Sharkey himself didnt compete in a world title fight till 1899 losing to Jeffries.

Irish bias aside do you think these 2 men deserve to be considered world champs? I think so since Corbett retired and nominated Maher and O Donnell to fight for the title.
