Apples use standard PC drives but I think the mac mini uses a laptop drive.

Double check to see if it burns DVDs as I think some Superdrives do so.

A superdrive IS a DVD burner

The slot-loaders Apple use for their laptops and the Mac Minis are obscenely expensive; something is putting a figure around 150 euro into my head for a DVD burner version, but I have no idea where I'm getting that figure from.

The cheapest route by a long shot is an external USB one. If you have the desk space, it's a lot less hassle and it's definitely much cheaper.

    Try one of these. http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=579385
I have the older model and it works like a charm. I got it to use with my netbook but it works just as well with the Mac mini. It also powers itself from usb so it only needs one usb port.

Same happened to me. The DVD drive on my macbook got very temperamental. Was very expensive to fix so I got an ok external one and put the saved money aside to go towards a new one a bit down the road.

Thanks for all the help i will probably go with the external drive , its not the ideal thing as i wanted a really small footprint but then again i can use the dvd drive with a p.c. as well , i am going to do a bit more research and see what type of slot loading drives i can use , i have replaced the ram with 2 gigs so have the case opened and don't want to put it back together only to open it again.
