    Howdy lads,

here are the first impressions from the Rally front:

Feel free to update with videos, pictures, whatever you have. I expect Co. Galway to be buzzing this weekend and i'll sure post whatever I come across.

I'd like to take my kids to watch a stage, but I can't find maps or information anywhere. Is there any way of finding out where the rally will be today/tomorrow without having to find a shop that sells programmes and spending €11 on one?

    Thanks,
    Buffer.

I agree it's poor form not giving stage details, the program is quite pricey for the casual spectator.

...and the PA was very distorted for the start last night in Oranmore...wasn't very exciting anyway

Poor form, and probably not good for business: most people aren't born enthusiasts, they start out as curious or casually interested, and they aren't going to spend money and effort finding out about an event that they're not extremely interested in to begin with.

I might be mistaken, but I think that the stage details used to be in the Galway Advertiser. This year they're definitely not.

By requiring people to pay to find out the basics of the event, I think the organisers are excluding a future generation of potential enthusiasts.

In all fairness these rallies (International in particular) cost a fortune to organise and the organisers have to help fund it somehow. Rally programs are one of these ways.

There are very few national/international sporting events that you can go to for free.

All I know is that I won't be bringing my three young boys, just because it is not free and convenient to find out where to watch.

If I had, most likely they would have wanted to get a programme as a souvenir, and next year they'd be even more excited to go. Either that or the youngest one will be frightened by the noise and we'd have to leave after 5 minutes (whch is why I'm certainly not prepared to pay money to find out where to take a look).

I think the Galway Races is a good example of how you can combine free and paid access, with most of the revenue coming from advertising and ancillaries. Perhaps the Rally organisers could look at a model where they make enough information available, on their website and in local newspapers, so that casual spectators can at least identify a stage or two they could watch, while those who are more interested would still be motivated to buy the programme so that they'd get more details.

The rally is free. It's not the organisers fault that you can't say no to your kids. There's no pleasing some people. Better for us fans if the "casual fans" stay away anyway. Easier to get to stages if theres less traffic.

I have no idea what you're talking about, but I think you are trying to be insulting.

Yes, but it appears that since the organisers can't charge people to attend the rally, instead they are charging people (via the programme) to say where to go to attend it.

If I am wrong about this, please tell me where this information is available without charge.

Better for the rest of us too, if all "real fans" have your hostility to those who would like experience the rally for the first time.

The rally route is on the galway coco website and in the local papers in the road closed sections... If you want the info for free you have to go looking.. There is a reason the programs are the only place to buy maps for the rally..

You say you have 3 boys and yourself.. If you went to the match in croke park today it would be over 250 euro yet if you wanted to watch over 130 rally cars you can for a 10er... Can you tell me any international spectator sport that is cheaper??

Here's the video footage from Stage SS1 (Belleville). I was in Ryehill. The morning was cold and foggy, so it's a bit grim.

    1/4

    2/4

3/4 - Highlights: Fergal Allen on BMW M3 E30 at 1:44 - Billy Coogan on BMW M3 E30 at 2:42 - No. 65 then at 3:47 has some of the marking tape stuck on the back spoiler and was dragging that along.

4/4 - Highlights: Sean Boyle, Escort Mk.1, No. 115 at 1:43 - No. 126 at 3:04 Brendan Dunne. His Civic has various things chewed away: only center piece of the front bumper is left, both windows in the back are gone, tail lights are gone, etc. But he kept on rallying throughout the day.

I've got footage from 2 more stages today still to upload and will also be out tomorrow.

I'm not being hostile. If you want the info for free, just ask. There are plenty of sites where you'd be able to get the general whereabouts of the rally. After that just take a cruise along to same general areas, and ask any fan. I know I'd be more than happy to show my map to anyone who asks.
After all is said and done, even if you don't like asking people, €11 for two days entertainment for 4 people isn't really a lot.
I'm not sure what kaizersoze's and CrowdedHouse's problems are either, only sign of hostility on this thread is in that direction, not mine.

It's clear you both have different opinions on this, and neither of you are going to change. So how about we leave it at that? It really isn't relevant to the thread.

Stage SS5 - Sweeper car overshot the turn a wee bit.

Stage SS5 - Junction 12 - Windfield - Random footage and fails from Stage SS5, Junction 12. I've got tons more footage, but it's a bit too much, so I edited a few of them together.

There are from yesterday obviously. I'm working on the footage from stage SS9 yesterday and stages SS10,SS13 and SS14 today. Will soon also be online.
I was too lazy to stick it all online :)

It's been an eventfull weekend, that's for sure. And congrats to both MacHale's, Breen, Fisher and actually .. everybody that had the endurance to go the whole distance.

It's sad to see, that McNulty had to pull out after stage 13 with a bust gearbox and a few others also disappeared over the weekend, but I'm sure, they'll be back.

Both Escort Mk. 1 disappeared over the weekend. I still have to find out, what happened to no. 115, Sean Boyle, might have been trouble with the new setup he was running. H3's story ended in a tow after stage 11 this morning.

    Anyhow .. good fun altogether.

Stage SS9 - Tiaquin Cross, a couple of the first cars, then my battery unfortunatly died.

Stage SS10 - Killnadeema, sunday morning. 2 guys came through on flat tyres.

Stage SS11 - Duniry. By the time I arrived in Duniry, SS11 was still on.

    Stage SS13 - Duniry.
