    Hi fella's,
it's my sisters car has failed on the emissions.
    It's a 1.3 I think. Would that even have a catalyst?
What would be gone to this failure.... any particular sensor or injector fault or?

Don't know anything about those cars... and I don't have the failure in front of me, so I can't give you the exact %'s

    Any suggestions?

A 97 Lancer should have a catalytic converter. Without seeing the actual results it's diffiuclt to say anything about what could be causing it.

But if the car failed on lambda >1.03 and nothing else, then it is very likely that there is a hole in the exhaust.

They do have a catalyst installed and they do give trouble aswell...
If the reading is way over what it should be I would swap the catalyst over for a second hand one. It is nearly always the catalyst in these cars that go.
    I drive one myself.

Aw jeebus! I'm fairly sure she will not be pleased if that's the case!
If they go often then they will be hard to find. Is there another Cat that could be welded in instead?

I'll try and get the emissions readings so we will have a better idea.

Assuming it is the cat thats knackered you can get one in a scrap yard easily enough. Then again it may be a sensor thats gone or it just needs a good oil change.

  • you cant assume its anything without looking at the results of the emissions test, post up the results and then ppl can give a better diagnosis :)

    Hi lads,
here is what the sis tells me:

    engine/oil temp 107C
    High idle (2780rpm)
    Lambda 1.02 (limit btwen 0.97 - 1.03
    CO 0.50 vol%( limit above 0.30%)
    HC 99ppm( limit above200ppm)

    Hmmm high CO

High CO usually means it's running too rich. Is this at low or high idle?
It could be a large variety of things causing this - sensors, vacuum leaks, thermostat stuck open, a dodgy cat, or even just a blocked air filter.

Has it been serviced recently, or at all?

  • seems to be at high idle
high co at high idle is a cat fault as the cat is not able to pull down the co enough.
Your lambda reading and hc are fine so its not over fueling

I would bet it is the cat thats gone...

Ah ok, what's the best thing then, try to sniff out a second hand replacement somewhere? Do any other cars have a smiliar cat to fit it?
