Root Canal or what??

I have just had some dental work done after quite a few years away
from dentist. I have the remains of a back tooth and the remains of a
lower far right tooth which were scheduled for extraction at the end of
the other treatments, I thought this would be straightforward.
The dentist did the xrays to see what he was dealing with before the
AP for extraction, He then told me I had a massive infection in the back tooth that had gone into the bone and also a lesser infection in the lower
tooth, He said I would need to be referred to a friend of his for Root Canal treatment x 2 estimating a lot of money !!! He also said the tooth beside the back
tooth was pretty past saving and it would be better to extract that too and not consider the price of a crown as I had wanted a lower crown

As far as I know root canal treatment is not for clearing infections when the
tooth is gone,,,,am I right? Is he having me on? Surely an infection could be treated for less?

Having done some research on root canals I fully realise that this scenario is wrong though dentist def said 2 was needed and all other teeth were fine
somehow we may have got each other mixed up when dentist made these
observations....I will go ahead with the obvious extractions and ask him
to clarify......all very odd I may not return after this AP and seek another opinion when the gums heal:confused:

Just to clarify, the infection in my top back tooth had gone into a tooth
on each side...two were extracted today and the remaining infected tooth
will be checked to see if it is suitable for root canal plus crown
The lower side tooth is also going to be checked to see if there is enough
there to allow a crown after root canal although it is very broken or else both teeth will have to be extracted .
All very pricey (the rootcanal stuff and crowns)but I will know what is what after the endontist
sees me!! I hope I can save these teeth

    It was all very unclear.

Get the root canal done by a pro I paid over 800 for mine my father had one do 18 years ago by a dentist who did a half assed job and one last year for about 400 again a half assed job, he ended up going to a specilest and getting both fixed first time in 18 years he's had no pain.
