Humax PVR USB question

I just transfered a film that I had on my laptop onto a usb memory stick.
Then I put it into the usb slot on the front of the humax, went through the next few necessary steps but no joy in playing it on or transfering it to the humax.
The humax is recognising the file and usb stick because the name of the file is shown on tv screen but it refuses to play it/copy it.
Do you have to copy it onto the humax's hard drive first or is it streamed from the usb stick?
The films have been recorded properly onto usb stick because a different computer that I've access to plays it fine.
It doesn't go into great depths about this on the PVR's intruction manuel.
    File size is 800mb.
    Thanks for any replies.

I could be corrected but the Humax is not a media player, it will playback files that emanated from itself via USB but that's it, it requires a .ts file format and a tiny file with info on it.

yeah afaik it records to mpeg2 .ts files and this is all it will play - it won't play mpeg4 (divx, xvid etc) off usb or off its own HD.

It wont play anything that hasnt been recorded on the Humax in the first place.

However, one can convert files using AV2HDR. With this one can enable non-native video to be imported onto the HUmax's hard disk.

Hats off to Raydon, its creator. Works nicely. A couple of minor niggles such as the next/previous chapter buttons didnt work on the clips that I converted, but really nice to be able to play other content on the machine.

I'm waiting for a version that works on a Mac - then I can junk on of the boxes under the telly.

I have actually done this with MKVs via Cocoon Software and the CTECH convertor tool that generates the fake PIDs for OTHER satelitte boxes. For example that works for the Technomate 6900HD and Clarketech 5000C.

Whats the AV2HDR convert time like ? I presume its recoding or is it just creating the PIDS like the Ctech javascript tool? What file format does the Humax record in and what are the additional files IFO ? IDX ?

The main file is .ts and the additional ones are .nts and .hmt

I've only done 4 or 5 so far and conversion time seems to vary between 5 and about 12 minutes for a 90 minute mpg2 recording which isn't too bad. It doesn't convert avi files though, so these have to be converted to mpg first which is much more time consuming.

Unfortunately the timing info in the resulting TS seems to be totally shot, because you don't get any time elapsed/remaining displayed during playback as well as the chapter buttons not working. The only way to navigate is by fast forward/reverse so the 64x speed comes in really useful. Not complaining though, as I got it for free!
