The origins of AbairLeat! lie in initial attempts by Coláiste Lurgan to exploit new developments in IT. The first version of AbairLeat! was a CD rom which enabled students prepare for a cúrsa Gaeilge on their home PCs. It soon became clear that developing interactive materials for on-line use as opposed to CDrom was the way of the future. Just over two years ago Coláiste Lurgan undertook with Block5 / Digilogue to develop an interactive series of games/activities as part of the enrolment process for 2008 summer courses. This proved to be a huge success.
In early 2008 the games/activities were expanded as a number of themed modules and branded as AbairLeat!’08. Deasún Mac an Easpaig contributed some content to the course and in the course of the year AbairLeat! was visited by up to a 80,000 users through www.desbishop.com and www.lurgan.biz
The next version of AbairLeat! ‘09 involved themed books. This format while effective had a number of drawbacks notably inconsistent downloading / cumbersome navigation etc…
The new AbairLeat! ‘10 has thankfully addressed many of the shortcomings of version ’09.
It is clear to anyone who has been monitoring AbairLeat!’s progress over the last two years that it possesses a strong dynamic momentum and it is realistic to expecte that the 2011 and 2012 versions will feature many new additions/ applications to the current one.
