Monitor for a Macbook

    Hi there,

I've got a Macbook and would like to set it up with a monitor, mouse and keyboard for working at a desk.

I understand that I have to get an adaptor for the laptop to work with cables for a monitor. And that I have to get a monitor.

But is there anything else I need to watch for?
I'm just conscious that it being a Mac, I don't want to end up with something I can't use!

It should work with most monitors. Get a decent LCD monitor and it should be ok. You can get them from around 200 quid (possibly less).
As you said, you'll have to get the adapter. It's a Mini DVI to VGA adapter. The type of mini DVI port your macbook has depends on how old it is as they changed it last year and made it smaller. So be careful you don't get the wrong adapter.

Keyboard and mouse should be fine.

Another thing that's a bit weird with macbooks, when you plug them into a monitor, both displays share desktop space. In windows there is an option to turn off the laptop screen but there is no option to do that on a mac. What you have to do is:

While plugged into the monitor and the power supply, close the lid (not fully) to to get it to go to standby.
Now stick you finger into the gap and try to press the keys to get it to come out of standby. Once it does, the macbook's screen will stay off and you can use the monitor as the main display. It's annoying but it works.
