Emission problem sounds like you'll need the o2/lambda sensor on the
exhaust replaced. There usually around €90.
Cv joint replacement about €150 or there abouts.
Hope the mechanic you picks isn't more expensive than that.

€90 + €150 = €240 not including labour. The car is worth less than that and it's going to cost at least that every year. Get rid of it and buy something reliable. Seriously.

But it only needs a boot on the CV, not the joint itself.

If the car has otherwise been reliable until now, why get rid of it?

It's not like it is a poverty spec one with the engine from the Anglia and no power steering seeing as it's a Ghia.

If on the other hand it has been a money pit then it's probably not worth repairing but there is no point whatsoever in getting rid of an otherwise perfectly good secondhand car.

Not great advice IMHO. No reliability issues mentioned and any car will need money spent on it every year for servicing, tyres etc. As to the value of the car, without knowing spec, condition, mileage and history I don't know how you can say it's beyond economical repair. Seriously.

If you like the car, spend the few pound on it, even less if its
just the cv boot thats needed. Good luck with the car, get a few more
months out of it and it'll have paid for itself.

Hey there yes the car has never failed me once in the two years I have had her started every time on all cold mornings. Its easier said than done spending money on a new car, with that comes a whole list of unknown issues, at least this way I would know where we stand with her mechanics-wise.

Yes it is just the CV boot not the joint that needs replacing.

thanks for all your replies, if I owned a FIAT brava like I used to I would not have bothered but my ford GHIA, its just been too reliable to give up on!

  • if it failed on high lambda then its not the lambda sensor, its an exhaust leak someplace

That's like saying 4 x €60 (or more) = €240 for new tyres, more than it's worth, => not worth repairing.

Parts wear out and need to be replaced eventually. Not everyone has the time to go searching for another car which may or may not come with a host of underlying problems waiting to surface.

€240 (or less) isn't a huge amount to put into a car to sort the present issues for a few years. If the body was tidy, and it felt mechanically sound otherwise, I'd pay to keep it going.
