hi, i have 2002 hyndai accent that needs a new catylalic convereter, how much will it cost and how how much labour costs to fit?
i bought it second hand from a prominent forecourt in limerick and had to bring it back to get replaced 4 times in 6 months, any reason why this kept happening?
    thanks in advance

You bought the car second hand from a prominent forecourt in limerick and had to bring it back to get what replaced 4 times in 6 months? The cat?

I changed my own cat last year and got one off ebay for 150 or so.
If you get a garage to do it for you it'll be closer to 400 (part & labour).

sorry meant replaced the cat 4 times.
any reason why it would need replacing four times?

    Four Times!!!

Theres definitely something causing them to go.
Unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust system will destroy a cat in no time!

    Is the car running alright?
Is your engine management light on all the time?
When you turn on your ignition, does the engine management light come on until you start the engine?

Wow, cats don't usually go dead that fast. My cat was OEM and +10 years old.
There must be some underlying issue here.
What makes you notice it's dead? Noise/smoke/... ?
    What did the garage say?

sounds a bit unlikely that they'd spend that kind of money 4 times. My guess is they'r using second hand parts and not actually fixing an ignition fault with the car.

Bought a Golf a few years ago, cat went under warranty, brought it back to garage I bought it from, they sent it off to quick fit.

All was great till I brought it into NCT and failed on emmisions, turns out they welded an empy pipe into it instead of a cat. By the time I realized what happened it was out of warranty.

    Fek I was mad!

the car runs fine, the orange engine symbol stays on, the car just sounds like a boy racer
each time i brought it back the told me that they fixed/changed it each time and the mechanic told me that i was fine to drive it if it happened again that was nine months ago and i have been driving it with the warning light on for 6 months.
without naming the garage in question it was a hyundai dealer.

if the engine symbol stays on..honestly, it sounds like it's had a de-cat if it's running fine.
if there is a cat in it and the symbol comes on you will have running problems

excuse my ignorance, but what is a decat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,528 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

a decat pipe is a pipe the same size as the catalytic convertor, it's used on performance cars to remove any restriction that the cat would cause. I had one on my old car and it makes it more free revving but slightly louder.
Car will fail an NCT without a cat though.

Take it to a decent garage and find out what's killing the cats and bringing on that light. Some places will fit a universal cat, there's a garage that advertises in the local Limerick free papers for about 160yoyo? Will cost more if there's bits to be replaced to prevent the light coming on again...

any jobs done by the garage would have a 12 month warranty wouldn't they? if they misdiagnosed the problem in the first place, it's still their problem.

Either there is something wrong with the engime management system in your car (as indicated by orange light) which is causing excess fuel into your cat which will kill it, or the garage are telling you lies, or the cat has been removed.

I'd bring it to someone who has diagnostics and emissions measurement systems to get it looked at properly if you want to sort it out. You can get a new cat fitted for less than 200 euro but if the underlying problem isn't fixed then you are wasting your money.

If you need a referral to someone in Limerick who could look at this for you PM me.
