Jesus, completely surprised by that. I expected him to be playing for another couple of years, he's not that old and still a great player.

yeah 29 years old but pocock is breathing down his neck now and smith was benched a few times this year too. one final payday in the heineken cup by the looks of it.surely he could have held on until the world cup was over though.

Breathing down his neck sure, but you would have thought that might have incentivised him to really up his game. He's a great player - it's a shame to see him give up international rugby. Though he's obviously going north for the pay day, which you can't entirely blame him for I guess. I expected him to come close to breaking Gregan's cap record.

    Shocked by that.

Surely he could have held on for another year and gone after the RWC?

Shades of Jerry Collins imo, gone before his time. One of the top Wallabies in the professional era.

How long is Nick Williams contracted for? I'd love to see George Smith come to Munster. He's still only 29.

I was still living in Australia when he was starting out. After the Wallabies' RWC win in 1999, some of the Aussie media were talking about 2003 and a possible XV.
For the nr7 shirt, there were two names to succeed the mighty Dave Wilson. First was George Smith. Second was . . . Keith Gleeson.

Smith is one of the greatest breakaways I've ever seen play. A fantastic team man and exemplary forward.

he is exactly the signing Munster need to push the boat out for, if Howlett and Williams are gone by end of this season there will be cash available for a TH prop and a backrower.
No doubt the Munster guys will be on the phone to Jim Williams asking him to have a quiet word in his ear....

110 caps and two world cups already no need for him to stick around any longer.

Will get a nice juicey 3/4 year contract with a HC club that he thoroughly deserves. Would be an addition to any team
