Health expenses: PAYE online or Fill the med1 form

I need to claim some health expenses, now I am wondering what is best way to do it.

If you fill the Med 1 form there is a lot more details you have to fill than if you use the PAYE online system. With the form you need to put your total pay, total tax, total expenses, expenses reimbursed by your health insurance if you have one etc.

On the other hand the PAYE online system only asks for the amount on which tax relief is claimed (I assume this is the difference between the total expenses minus the reimbursed by the insurance.)

What system is the best? Anybody has experience using both?

PAYE Anytime is probably easier and will be processed quicker

You get quicker refund if you do it online provided that you have your bank details in the PAYE Anytime.

It is important however to keep all receipts and medical forms as they might be looking for them before issuing any refunds.

PAYE Anytime without a shadow of a doubt.

Have done it for a number of private clients in the past weeks and most refunds were issued within a week.

Thank you all for your replies.:)

I´ve done it online finally, it turns out that it will ask you for the same details as in the form, after you put the amount on which you claim there are more steps where you have to fill other details as total pay, total tax etc....

If you were claiming for last year's (2009) then these details won't be on PAYE Anytime yet. If you wait a while (until after you get your P60) then the details will be there, and you won't have to enter them yourself.

If you were claiming for 2008, then it's just a matter of entering the amount of your medical expenses, and you're done.

    Often.

    GP - yes

Pharmacy - Prescribed drugs are allowed against tax, if it was lemsip and strepsils and the like that you were getting then no, not allowed.

You can't claim for 2010 until the end of the year (ie., until 2011) other than in exceptional circurstances and even then it must be agreed with your inspectorof taxes.

I have an absolute ton of medical expenses to claim for, got sick in september 09 and was going to my gp every other week, as well as a specialist and regular prescriptions, just looking at 3 presciption forms from 3 random months and its all 120quid a pop, anyone have any idea how much of this I'd get back? my VHI covers my doc visits and I think the specialist ones, but can I claim back tax on those as well? can easily photocopy all the reciepts.

You will get back 20% of the qualifying medical expenses provided,(1) you have paid tax in the first place to be refunded, (2) only to the extent that the expenses have not been refunded to you

by whom, health insurer for example?
    How would they know?

They won't know, you can tell them what you want. The system is self assessment, you are responsible for what you submit. You submit according to THE rules, not your rules ;-)

They do ask. Have had to provide receipts on a number of occasions.
Depending on what the missing receipts were for, you can possibly get copies. For example, my GP runs off a list of visit times & paid amounts for me if I need it (saves me keeping lots of individual receipts). Same with my pharmacist.
