Sorry if this has been asked loads of times before but I'm considering getting an air rifle, I have firearms experience and probally wont be using it too often but I would like to get a decent gun. I have a good hunting dog and want an excuse to get out. Can anyone recommend a particular gun or make and if possible under €300. Thanks

I've just bought a Cometa 400 in Newry for less than 300 euro. It's got great reviews so will do a job on small vermin for me. Can't wait to pick it up when the paperwork is sorted.

Thanks mallards, a tidy looking gun by the way.
Have been putting out a bit of maize in a small wood lately, going to try my hand a the hat cam but have a feeling the 223 would be a bit over kill:D

I got a Norica Dragon from Corrib Tackle in Galway. Set me back a little over 3 with scope. Beware you may need a safe as well, so factor that into your costs. I hadn't !!

You can buy a new Gamo Shadow RSV 0.22" (5.5mm) with black synthetic stock, 4*32 scope, and built in sound moderator for under €300. Fine rifle, does the business and looks the business. PM me if you want more information.

There's very little you can hunt with an airrifle and stay on the right side of the law plus if you want to be shooting over a dog the airrifle will be very inadequate in regards to range and power.

Whats the story with the license for a air rifle and moderator? is it the same crack as a normal gun?

some airguns have moderaters built in as part of the package so just apply for the gun, otherwise you probably have to apply for it
Also check out some of the airgun mags in easons, airgunner, airgun world
these are uk publications and off er the reader a wealth of knowledge.
They do many reviews every month and airgun hunting stories and advice.
also a great idea to compare prices.

With regards to a moderator, bear in mind that theres no point getting one (unless your using a PCP or CO2 version maybe) cause the noise of an air rifle is caused by the mechanics and not the pellet.

Can you just buy an air-rifle up north and bring it back here?
I know that it is illegal to have one in Ireland with out the proper paper-work ect.

dont know the exact legality of it, but if caught i assume the person would be in serious trouble, bringing firearms across the border. i wouldnt recommened anyone trying it

Of course you can, if you like court rooms that is.

    On a serious note, no.

    Sandy,
You want a Diana RWS air rifle with a side action, not the break action. Take your ammo: .17 or .22. I like model 48 as shown at
    http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=159654018

I have one that puts pellets easily through plywood. Definitely not a toy.
