Chain Guide

Prototype photographed, mounted on a Specialized SL Pro. It ought to fit just about any bike with a braze-on front derailleur.

The keeper does not touch the frame. The only contact point is the mounting bolt.

Some more details: CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminium. Finish: brushed aluminium or clear anodized.

Since the first prototype was made, improvements were added to the design. All edges are now beveled. A channel has been routed along the length of the part. On the leading edge, there is a heavy bevel to improve chain guiding. See the other 2 photos.

Comes with an M5x20 and an M5x25 stainless steel Allen bolt and washer.

€18ea, plus €4 shipping. Limited quantities - this is a hobby piece rather than a commercial venture!

    PM me if interested.

    Hi Dave,

    What length are these?

I purchased a K-Edge version recently for my Focus Cayo triple and it is too short at 95mm. For a 105 triple I reckon I would need about another 20mm.

These are a good idea as my perfectly adjusted chain decided to make a break for freedom off the inside of the small chainring and managed to put a few small paint chips off my loveley CF frame:mad: Never had any trouble with my front shifting before or since the incident.

Exact same thing happened with my Cayo triple incidentally.

They are right at 100mm. Alas, they are curved at the business end - like other manufacturers'. I would not recommend it for a triple.

Hi Dave, would they fit a compact chainset?

    gman2k,

I just uploaded 4 new photos of the prototype version, fitted to my Specialized. The Spec has a 39/53 chain set. Have a look at the pics that show how the device snugs up to the 39. Please ignore the dirt & grime. It was wet out there today.

Note: the prototype's dimensions are identical to the final version's. The only difference is the fancy beveling and routing.

It may work with a compact - I just can't say for sure. You'll have to make the judgment call.

I do think it is long enough. The issue would be the curve. Would it curve inwards too much above the small ring? If so, you could always file off a portion of the curve.

    Dave

Thanks for the reply Dave. I'll have to try to get another solution.

Yup complete PITA:mad: Took me about 20 min pulling at the chain while trying not to damage the frame any further to get it out. Ruined that spin (And my bar tape !!).

    Joff.

    Thanks for the feedback, Lumen.

BTW: there's another batch in the works. It will be completed tomorrow. The colour of choice for this round is: black.

Sorry, missed that post. Yes, its an Addict. I like it.

@dave2pvd: those black ones look fantastic. Might order another one when the next bike comes in. Do they work with band-on mechs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭dave2pvd

    Lumen: braze-on only.

For band on, I'd recommend the N-Gear Jump Stop. I would not recommend the Dog Fang.

ednwireland, I don't know the answer to that. It should work. No guarantee though.

If these are the same length as the last batch I doubt if they are long enough to reach the inside of the small ring on a triple. They won't on my Cayo with Shimano 105.

They are longer. By 5mm, or so.

@ Dave2pd - Can you help? I have what must be common but none of the chain catching devices appear to address, a pretty much non-round (oval/ squared) Carbon Fibre tube, which is fairly chunky (can get measurements) and a triple chainset, the derailleur for which is a band-on.
Is there a reason why your unit would not work - you seemed to recommend others for band-ons? My deraillerur would have a bolt in pretty much the same place as a braze-on? I definitely could do with SOMETHING that does this job after scratching my lovely paint-job recently...
    Thanks.

Cadex, I really don't know if it will work with band-on or not. I suppose it's worth a try - surely the device can be mounted with spacers (washers) underneath so that it clears the band's Allen bolt recess?

Have you tried an N-Gear Jump Stop? I believe the clamp is plastic/flexible, so it might conform to your tube shape.

    Bump!

    Why?

4 hours into my ride tonight, my chain made some serious contact with my chain guide.

    Frame gouge prevented :)

    D!armu!d,

I have a few left. You'll need the Campag machined washer (EUR2ea) also.

Anyone else? It will save (you) postage if I can send several.

Dave, got my catcher in the post today - Cheers!!!!

PS, Roche had trouble with his chain catcher last week during a wheel change!

Good stuff. Post up a pic once you have it installed.

Anyone got Roche's number? What about Lavenu?

dave2pvd - just wondering how much these weigh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭dave2pvd

Gerry, they weigh about as much as a sneeze.

Seriously, since they're made out of 6061 aluminium, they're very light. Right at 10g to be precise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 178 ✭✭gerrybmw

Perfect - would like to order 2 (in black) for use with Campag compact chainsets. Please PM me with details of cost etc.

Should another one be ordered and posted to Andy Schleck?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,830 ✭✭✭doozerie

Getting further off-topic here, but Schleck should possibly consider updating his SRAM Red rear derailleur instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭dave2pvd

Curiously, Brother Schleck and I have an almost identical setup. Red RD, chain catcher, Spec crankset, SL Pro frame (pretty close to the S-Works).

I have had some strange mis-shift that jams the chain....I had always assumed it to be chain suck due to worn rings.

If anybody has any doubts about these DON`T! They`re a classly functional piece of kit. Fine for 53/39 chainset but just check about other chainring sizes especially Compacts.

I'm running one of Dave's catchers on a Campag compact - no problems
