ok so this semester im gonna finally go for it after alot of procrastinating

because im in college i have access to alot of different styles but i dont know which i should do

i did judo when i was 12/13 it was fun but i wasnt very good at it and i dont remember loving it

im thinking about taking two assuming training sessions dont clash(a stand up and a ground style)

i dont care too much for competition although contact fairly full contact sparring would be fun i think and mainly im doing it so im more confident in myself

    my options are these

    judo
    karate shotokan
    krav maga
    tae kwan do
    kickboxing
jujitsu(not sure if its brazilian or whatever)
    aikido

im thinking kickboxing and jujitsu but what do you guys think?

What college are you going to?.

Also if your not interested in competition then Judo isn't for you as you'll be required to fight for your belts after green, ie for your blue, brown and black you'll be fighting.

Finally, have you checked out the Self Defence & Martial Arts forum?.

Not sure if MMA is the right forum for this, perhaps SD&MA instead.

Anyway, if your posting in the MMA forum I'm assuming you like MMA. If so, give MMA a go. Most major universities have MMA clubs these days. These clubs usually have separate coaches for the individual elements of MMA. So there will be one coach for striking and another fro grappling etc.

If you don't like the entire MMA package you may get some insight into the styles that make MMA fighters and pursue that one instead.

    Best of luck.

    tae kwan do

Taekwondo is about 85% kicks (people would say more than 85%) if your not flexable then there is no real point as you'll never be good at it

Or B) Taekwondo is about 85% kicks, which means that it can promote flexibility and you'll improve over time.

In some styles you don't even have to fight for your belts!.

But in Judo you'd have to fight for your blue, brown & black and you'd have to travel to national gradings or in the case of the black belt some competitions carry points towards your black for a win.

much to my annoyance i found out thoday the entire bjj mma kickboxing group of clubs has fallen apart in our college so my choice is now

    karate shotokan
    judo
    krav maga
    taekwando
    aikido

seen as i do like mma i think ill go for judo for take downs and ground stuff and shotokan for punching / kicking

anyone know much about shotokan? one of my good friends fought for ireland in it at the worlds so ill ask him when i see him but in the mean time any thoughts?

In the north you have to fight for every belt up to black

Thats what makes judo good. U don't get ur belt for just turning up and brown nosing the instructor or being related to him

The judo club in UL has got itself back on its feet in the last few years and the lads down there are doing a great job. I'd recommend you have a nose into that first. I'd actually recommend you don't try and combine a grappling martial art with a striking martial art if you have some notion about being a more functional martial artist.

by all means do as many as you have time for. But if you really want to get to grips (no pun intended) with something you really need to give it at least 2 good classes a week so I reckon you should stick with one and for at least the rest of term (which isn't really much) get stuck into it.

Yea but everyone know's the nordies are an awful rowdy bunch, we have to have it knocked into us down south :p

But seriously, I didn't know that.

At the risk of offending anyone but I can only imagine how scrappy a white - yellow belt would go. Do you think its a good idea?.

OP - go with the advice Sid gave.

I'd pick Judo from that bunch, and I promise by the time your ready for your blue belt fighting for it won't cause you a second thought.

Yeah for me it was a good idea. I enjoyed it when i started.

You have lower kyu sections at a lot of comps. Its not really any different to that.

Shotokan is a traditional form of karate, using a lot of deep stances for power in basic training. It's a very strong form of karate, but doesn't require great physical strength to take it up.

Here's a link to the UL Karate Club FACEBOOK page. But why not simply have a look at the club training and then join?
