Im a sole trader but not VAT registered.
What details should my invoice contain?
Ok, it will be on my standard letterhead containing business name, address & contact details. Will obviously be marked INVOICE and numbered in sequence.
Do I need to state that it is not a VAT invoice or is that assumed when there is no VAT breakdown shown?
Do I need my Tax number on it or is that only for VAT receipts

    Thanks

you do not mention VAT on anywhere on the invoice.
you do not mention your tax number anywhere on the invoice (as this could be incorrectly mistaken as your VAT number).
you can have your contact details.
you mention what services/goods you supplied.
you mention the sales amount of the service/goods on the invoice
you would be wise to also have credit terms - e.g. COD- Cash on Delivery, 30 Days Credit, Payment on completion of services

If you want you can register for VAT, it is a simple procedure. By registering for VAT, you can also claim VAT that you incur - e.g. VAT on diesel, VAT on mobile phone. If you do so, you would then change your invoicing details (also easy to do). Depending on who your customers are it may make sense to register for VAT if they are registered for VAT.

    Thanks,

Thats perfect. Yes im aware of the possibility of registering for VAT but its a very small business at the minute and I deal mostly with non business people so not having to charge VAT makes my prices cheaper for those type of customers compared to a VAT regd person.
I understand that if I am invoicing a business, adding VAT makes little difference to them as it will be claimed back anyway but as I said, its mostly private people I am invoicing. I was just making sure that I was getting it right.
