Does anyone actually work from 9am to 5pm? That's only a 7-hour day with an hour lunch break and I would have thought most people were on <> 40 hour weeks and very few employers pay for lunch breaks.

Where did this expression even come from and why is it in use?

Well it just fit the song better..."working half nine to around 6" just doesn't sound right, does it dolly?

My mother used to work 9 to 5 in an office somewhere back in the mists of time (the 1970's)
Im pretty sure the insatiable desire for the accumulation of wealth by large corporations put paid to it.
As far as i know the norm is now 9 to 5.30, but Im not certain because i work ungodly hours.

Some people are on 39 hour weeks which means paid lunch presumably and 7 hours on the Friday.

I do 8.30 to 5.30 Monday to Thursday and 8.30 to 4.30 Friday so I guess I don't get paid for lunch.

And why ( for most people ) do we work Mon - Fri ? who decided on that ? Why not Mon -Thurs ?

It makes you really depressed if you think that for some people, they leave at 7am and return at 7pm, Monday to Friday for 40 years, they then retire at 65 and prob die about 75 !! :(

    Enjoy the weekends people *

    We've always been 9 - 5 with a 10 minute breakfast break and 30 minutes lunch.

I get paid for 37 hours. 9-5.30 Mon - Thurs and 9-5 Mon - Fri. (Don't get paid for lunch hour)

I spend a lot of that time on t'internet though.

37.5 hours is a standard working week (in every office I've ever worked in anyway)

I do 8 to 4 and only take a half hour for lunch so I can leave at 4 rather than half

I get paid for doing a fixed amount of work over a week long period, so the hours can vary depending on my mood

I work 9 - 5:30 and I hate Dolly for making that last half hour drag in.

Then again, i'm on a work call right now so can't complain too much about my job. See men can multitask, we would just rather it wasn't multitasking by cleaning and cooking, rather Xbox and ball scratching!

Start work anytime between 2pm-6pm and finish anywhere from 10pm-7am,

    Usually do 50hr weeks.

Just for the record, I work 9-6.30 Mon-Thur and 9-5.30 Fri (39 hours incl. 4 hours obligatory "overtime").
I could do with much shorter lunch breaks and going home earlier.

Stay your hands with the impetuous Dolly-centric abuse.

Is not Sheena Easton also responsible?

I work 8-4.30 and dont get paid for lunch. We get a total of 1.15hrs for lunch. 1 hr is unpaid for. I think. Not entirely sure.

But im in work right now and im on boards. So I cant complain. And I dont work weekends.
