MMDS Revision / UPC Player

    Hi

As a MMDS customer, I am generally happy with my service. In fairness the only other option is Sky and excuse me but no thanks. what is disheartening though is that my town is cabled for CATV but it is not used due to Chorus F**ing it up with council and an ensuing court case. The wires are there outside my house grrrrrr!

Anyway, I was thinking about the MMDS service, I'm NTL MMDS by the way. I think it seriously need revising.
So I had a few thoughts, see what ye think and if ye have any better ideas perhaps us MMDS customers can pass them on to HQ.

    1) get rid of +1 channels, they are taking up space just showing the same as the normal channel. These slots can be used for a host of channels were not currentl getting, but paying for. We mostly have the PVR so that would make +1 channels redundant anyway.

    2) an a la carte approach, web based system, if you are not using Movies, Sports ect then these channels are removed from your EPG and the missing cxhannels are slotted in. All done online through "your UPC" login? If possible?

    3) a UPC Player ie like BBC & RTE player, so it gives us MMDS customers a chance to watch some of the programming we are paying for but currently cant view? Again through "My UPC" login which would automatically assign the available channels to your subscription. Surely fairly simple?

    Any thoughts

    Regards

    GP

Agreed. While this isn't an issue for me (I'm lucky enough to live in a part of Dublin with full service and range of channels) I don't understand why they wouldn't do this by default.

No not possible. You share the signal with others. Only if everyone wanted the exact same range of channels at every conceivable time, would this work.

Possible, but far from simple. An on-demand service in particular, would be difficult. They'd have to go through all sorts of licencing issues for that, and not even with the relevant channels - with the studios who make the programmes. An IPTV approach is more feasible, in that they might not even need additional contracts with anyone for that, BUT the set-up costs would be high. And it would rely on the Eircom-maintained network (so enough said)

Sounds interesting, where do you live. Is it a case the area is ducted but no links into the homes. How many homes in the area and are they recently built?.

Chorus managed not to cable very large areas of suburban and commuter belt Cork too.

They took the attitude that MMDS was 'grand' as the old Chorus digital cable line up was the same as MMDS anyway.

The cable system's now vastly improved and broadband is the selling point, yet there are literally tens of thousands of non-cabled homes in this city.

The arrival of BBC on Sky also basically finished any hope of Chorus MMDS subscriptions sticking around too.

It was an incredibly short-sighted policy and I think UPC will be kicking themselves that many of these areas weren't cabled when they were built.

    Retrofitting cable's damn expensive!

The other option is "Freesat HD" + Aerial. Once off costs. You only need Pay TV if you "need" Sky Sports and similar.

Note when you cancel sky the box is yours and you get all the Freesat/FTA channels free. When you cancel UPC there is nothing.

So keep the Sky box and don't let UPC interfere with the "sky" coax. You own that too. It also works for a "Freesat HD" box and can be extended to another room.

Maybe UPC will sort out some of these areas in 2013 as the MMDS is likely to close in 2014.

You'll get all the important ones. i.e RTEs, BBCs UTV, ITV 1+2, Channel 4 +E4s Sky 1+2, History, Biography, Discoveries, Animal Planet, Gold, Dave, a few News channels, Film 4 and + 1, Setanta Ireland, Sports & Movies channels, ESPN to name a few. Thats not them all, but hopefully will give you a flavour of whats in store. You will not get all that cable customers do due to bandwith issues.

if mmds customers cant get the same channels as cable customers why do we still have to pay the same price ah well i think im still getting a good deal for about 30 euro less than sky was charging me for just my package and sky sports with the multiroom i can get mostly the same and the movie channels with multiroom so if i miss a couple of channels i'll get used to it was sick of sky ripping me off just one last question whats the remote like is it hard to use have read some people complaining about it.

Well, UPC raised their prices a year ago, but this increase was not applied to mmds customers.
