They are both the same essentially. The HDip is now called the PGDE (Postgraduate Diploma in Education) same as the UL one. UL run subject specific teacher training courses, eg Business. So you can only be admitted to the course if you have a relevant Business degree. The HDip as run by NUI colleges is the same teacher training qualification but it is open to all applicants with a relevant degree but you can still only teach the subjects in which you are qualified. ie if you apply for HDip in Galway you'll still be training to teach business subjects.

Thanks that clears up a lot. The only thing i don't understand the Shorthand test you have to take. I just can't see what it has to do with anything.

I think there used to be a Shorthand/Typewriting course in existance at Inter/Junior Cert level many years back and that this is possibly a legacy of it. I have a friend who did the course and said while shorthand wasn't terribly interesting or useful, it wasn't the end of the world either. They did a short course in shorthand before the course started properly I think. But you will still have the same teaching qualification at the end of the day.

I've seen comments on here before slating the shorthand element but I'd look at it more positively. It's better to have an extra skill and not use it than not have it at all
