How long do those courses run for? The IT Department love Java, if you were going to do one of those, I'd say that one. But it's probably unnecessary, juding by this page. What's your background?

Need Help. Really interested to apply for this course in NUI Galway (Higher Diploma) but have no IT experience nor a numerate background. Was thinking of studying online with FAS beforehand as it may help me gain a place on this course. They have the following online courses :

Any idea which might be a good one to start with....the most relevant to what I might study in Software Design course. Many thanks.

I did this course a few years back and I'd recommend it fully. When you say you've no numerate background, what was your degree in?

A lot of the students going in there have *no* knowledge of programming and the courses assume this. Trust me I know!

Your links don't seem to work... But I will advise that if you want a heads up before starting, then start learning C. There's plenty of (free!) tutorials on the net and if you run into problems check out boards.ie programming forum

If you're worried about not getting a place, if I were you I'd email the course director and ask for opinions. I *really* doubt you'd need to do any FAS courses.

Feel free to ask any more questions.

I'm in a few modules with these guys. They do application programming in first semester which involves c programming. They are doing a module with my course now called object orientated programming. This involves C/C++ programming, they also have to do an add on to this module called GUI Programming which involves programming GUI's using Visual basic .NET. I don't know how much you know about computer programming so i'll assume you know nothing. GUI stands for Graphical User Interface. This is just a type of programming that allows you to take in information from a user using a nice looking form/window instead of a black & white command line.
My advice is start with c. Don't go near Java if your starting this course, switching from Java to C will confuse you. I did C in the first year of my course and then java for the next 2 and a half years, I'm now going back to C/C++ in the last semester of my degree and find getting used of C again to be a pain after using java for so long.
