Just wonderin about J1 forms. What forms do the travel agencies send out to you and what ones need to be brought to the embassy interviews? and What problems can arise when goin through immigration in the airports?

Well you have to complete the J-1 forms provided by the J-1 provider, they automatically cover your insurance forms. Your insurer will email you your policy and insurance certificate. You have to complete forms online and print them out, they have to be done very accurately. I think there are 4 altogether. You have to attach a photo to one also, the embassy is picky about this, but a lot of chemists will have the right measurement and will know straight away.

For the interview itself you are required to bring:

Your DS-160 (you'll conplete this online)
    One of those photos
A Bank Draft made out to the US Embassy
    Your passport
Evidence of being a student going to a degree
DS-2019 (will be sent to you)
SEVIS receipt (will be sent to you)

I think thats all but once you start going through the process the travel company will explain everything. Usually they have an online individual check list for everyone!

Do you HAVE to use a J-1 company (USIT, Go4Less, Sayit) or can you apply for your visa yourself?
And if so, is insurance necessary?

No, you can't do it yourself, I'll refer you to this thread:

Insurance is 100% necessary, the embassy won't look at you twice without it. The J-1 companies won't allow you to apply without it either!

Surely the point of that thread is that you can do it yourself?

No, we were explaining why you can't do it yourself and what you require for the visa.
