I'm not a techie so excuse my ignorance. I have pay as you go Meteor broadband. I don't download films and very little music, just normal browsing, messaging etc. My monthly pass with 7.5 cap lasted a little over a week, so due to Meteor's rather strange pricing structure I have to buy day passes until the 30 days are up.

I topped up on Tuesday by €20 and within and hour and a half the entire €20 was gone i.e. €2.99 day pass plus 2c per MB out of bundle charge. During this hour and a half I was browsing sports and news sites and a bit of YouTube. I got on to Meteor who got their technical team to report. They have agreed that there was normal browsing activity but during the hour and a half a 1.3GB file was downloaded. I certainly didn't knowingly download any files and I am pretty certain that nothing was downloaded in the background.

I bought a day pass this evening which has a 500MB limit. In the space of 5 minutes having looked solely at the Irish Rail website the Meteor statistics tool showed almost 190MB used. The Meteor site shows examples of the activity you can expect for a 500MB cap and indicates 10 hours browsing + 25 MP3 files + 25 short videos + 10 hours messaging etc. If so how can browsing 1 web site use almost 200MB.

I am completely baffled and the Meteor help desk have been little help. Any suggestions as to what is happening would be most appreciated.

Open windows task manager and check the networking tab to see how much bandwidth your using.

If your using vista or windows 7 goto performance tab and click resource monitor and it will show you what app is using the bandwidth.

Have you any software or windows set to auto update, some of these updates can be pretty big especially if you are well behind on the updates.

Thanks for the quick response folks. I'll check both suggestions out tomorrow.

Think I found the culprit. Its a programme called Kserve.exe.

I found a lot of articles and discussions on the web about it. It comes with the BBC iplayer and, in my case, Sky Player. Apparently it works away using your bandwidth even when you are not browsing. I hadn't realised that Sky Player is peer to peer so that when a guy in Cork for example goes to download a film from Sky Player, if its a film that I have downloaded from Sky previously (using my home broadband) it may upload the film from my laptop when I am using the Meteor mobile broadband thus certainly blowing my usage cap if I'm on a day pass.

I am a bit surprised that the Meteor help desk didn't suggest this as a problem. Surely they have come across it before.
