Implications of Excommunication.

I'm wondering if anyone knows the consequences, doctrinally, dogmatically or otherwise, of being excommunicated from the Catholic Church? As in, what happens to you in the Churchs opinion? What can't you do? Are you not allowed even step foot in a church anymore?
