Irish Times Riding Competition ?

I just flicked on the TV to watch the FA Cup match, and it was tuned to RTE2; there's some young guy on with one of those really weird Dublin/American crossover accents, and he said that tomorrow he'd be talking to the winner of "The Irish Times Riding Competition" !!!!

Given that that timeslot is a kids show, I hope he's talking about horses, although I'm pretty sure that he's not....

In fact, I'd be 100% certain that what he's on about has nothing to do with horses! ;)
The same irritating twang would have had him sign off from "DDV" on "RDE2"

'Writing Competion' you sad saggy sacked pervert.

And [ puts on Daire O'Briain accent ] "the points go to Flutter 'n Bantammmmm"....

Seriously, though - I thought I gave enough clues when I said that it was one of those annoying D4/US accents!

So basically, the question is : why don't people - particularly younger TV & radio presenters - pronounce things properly ?

Is it the odd slip-up (forgiveable) or is it a miguided attempt at sounding "cool" ?

    Was he Irish?

That Americanised Dublin accent bugs me. A lot of people I know who were born in South East Dublin don't actually speak like that.

It's often the preserve of people who move to the area or for those who for some strange reason seem to see the Americanisation of their accent as though it has grandiose implications.

It doesn't... you're not from The Hills... you grew up in Arklow... please stop it.
