What Chain?

Hi Guys. I have a Giant Scr 4.0 2007 model. I have done probably around 1500

miles on it now, so time for a change of chain, I think it is an 8 speed. it has 8

gears on the back cog, and 2 rings on the front crank(sorry im not up with the

terminology). anyway could anyone tell what kind of chain I need for this bike.

I got the rear and front derailleur aligned recently, would I need to put the

bike in for a service? or if possible could I do a few things myself to improve the

    bike?

    thank you

Replacing a chain is easy enough, you just need to get one with the right number of speeds. This is dictated only by how many cogs at the back, how many at the front does not matter. If you have the right speed they are all compatible pretty much. You will need a chain tool to shorten the new chain and then it joins either with a connecting tool pushed in with the chain tool (Shimano) or a master link (most other brands.) Both systems work fine as long as you follow the instructions.

    thanks

Will I need to have my derailleur's aligned again after I install the new chain?

No, it should all work fine as is. If you left it too long before replacement you might have worn the cassette but if you replace in time you are fine. You can measure the chain to try to figure out but if you just replace it you will find out quick enough; if it skips you need to replace the cassette as well. No skipping and you don't.
