Will Irish Iphone work in US?

I have an iPhone 3GS that I bought from O2 here in Ireland. It's currently unlocked via BlackRain and I'm using it on Vodafone here in Ireland.

I'm going to the US next month for a holiday and I'm wondering if my iPhone will work over there? I know some other phones don't work in certain countries due to the type of mobile network technology they have etc.

Even if that's not an issue, I'm not sure about roaming and whether Vodafone has a US version that I'd be roaming on.

    Thoughts?

my unlocked phone with 02 worked over there no problem, including data, although the roaming data charges cost a fortune

Yes it will, the iPhone is quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G, meaning it can run on virtually all mobile phone networks worldwide. It will work with AT&T over there, and T-Mobile (EDGE-only on T-Mobile).

Good stuff Grandmaster, you got the Iphone.

Phones have to be Tri-band to work in the states. Most phones are now. The Iphone is Tri band, i had mine over there last summer - great job. Sort out a skype account and install the app before you go. I use an app called speed check to check the speed of a free wi-fi before i use skype. if you get more than 300 kbits/s the call quality is perfect.

Data is a pricey, so stick to the free wifi in bars and hotel lobbys! Oh, the apple shop is always a good spot too!

    Cheers.

I don't plan to use my phone much when I'm over there. Just the obligatory texts to the folks back home to let them know I've arrived safely etc!

You would be advised to turn off "Data Roaming" in your settings when you get there. Everything bar apps that require data will still function perfectly - and those apps will still work in a wi-fi zone.

The iPhone has sneaky ways of using data and you will pay dearly for every byte. :pac:
