'Internet addiction' linked to depression, says study

Any direct causal link between internet use and depression remains unclear
There is a strong link between heavy internet use and depression, UK psychologists have said.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8493149.stm
"Our research indicates that excessive internet use is associated with depression, but what we don't know is which comes first - are depressed people drawn to the internet or does the internet cause depression?" said Dr Morrison.

"Now we need to investigate the nature of that relationship and consider the issue of causation."

Does the internet cause you depression?

Does having a high post count on boards make you depressed?

    The bbc says
"Although excessive internet use can't be said to cause mental health problems, if a web addict is substituting meaningful friendships and socialising with virtual contact on the internet, this might have an adverse affect on their mental wellbeing."

By extension that implies that the mods are the craziest people on Boards.

why so defensive? you're sitting around, not being outside, not being active, not seeing anyone. Course it could have an adverse affect if you over do it, like most things.

You don't have to rush to the internets rescue, it'll be ok.

That maybe quite a logical train of thought to follow.

1.2% of the people surveyed are addicted to the internet and only some of those said they suffered with depression

    It's hardly an overwhelming correlation

I'd say that it's more to do with depresion causing people to go online more due to lack of interest in doing other things rather than the internet causing the depression

It's not the only thing that implies it tbh.

Or maybe only a small percentage of depressed people could be bothered to respond to the online poll because well they were I dunno, depressed :D

Only the ones who were already spending all their time online at that.

They classed 18 respondents - 1.2% of the total - as "internet addicts".

This group spent proportionately more time on sex, gambling and online community websites.

It's really not looking good for people with high post counts.

That about sums up my internet existence. I gotta get out more.

    Poll results are fairly shocking

    I don't think it's a matter of internet = depression.

I think it's probably closer to depression = internet.

Subtle difference, but a difference all the same. Those with depression are more likely to retreat to the internet rather than the internet being the cause of depression.

Sure how could they be depressed, sounds like they're having a great time.

That poll is quite shocking, but it really depends what people would consider depression.

I mean we have all at some time been upset about something but should we really class that as depression:confused:

I was going to post a nice long reply to this thread, but I'm too depressed to do so.

That poll really doesn't say anything.

A lot of people will say they are / have been depressed just to add some definition to their average normal lives will having no clue what being depressed actually is.

Is that not something? The fact that so many people don't even know what depression is, is just as shocking as if it was them who were depressed

no wonder mental health awareness in Ireland is years behind other countries

IMO,it's a combination of things. Loners tend to be on the net more, and some may be depressed already. Excercise releases endorphins, social and family relations help fight of depression so it's to be expected that a solitary, sedentiary life based on the net is cause of depression.

Yeah, but it also causes extreme laughter and mirth, so it balances out. Unless someone posts goatse or anything else that vile in order to shock people. Essentially, it's playing with fire, but I like to gamble. :D

Care to take a wager on this link? :D

    *snip*

    something there rather nasty, apologies.

I hardly believe using the internet means you are depressed. People depressed are simply more likely to spend a lot of time on the net. Interet is escapism for some people.

I spend way too much time here.

    Are you depressed?

Anyway back to the real topic, but surely depression can stem from social isolation and if people end up spending more and more time on the internet, then that surely leads to social isolation and depression.
    Yes, No?
