Does anyone definitively know whether LED cycle lights alone are legal and whether they can be used in the flashing setting.

If so is there a document on this?

The law is being changed shortly to allow for flashing lights.

Thanks - I normally search first but didn't this time. In the meantime found this article http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2009/1229/1224261353163.html

I had no idea that flashing lights were illegal. The only reason I use them is that it makes me more visible, I find led lights are not very bright so I use the flash to make sure that cars see me when I'm in heavy traffic.

I've been using them in that setting for years now and never had a clue they were against the law...

I would say 99% of cops had no idea either, I think they would be pleased you had anything.

You can get very bright ones these days, you might consider upgrading your lights. Something like this would be a good buy.

+1 on the Smart 1/2 Watts.

The Catye EL 530 is a bright LED-based front light. No flashing setting on it, but it's not bad for seeing on unlit streets. There are much better though.

Yeah, the smarts are good in the back. Remember, you're not limited to having just one light :)

Thanks a mil for the recommendation, nice price on them, just bought it mainly for the back light. My current front light is pretty good one I've had for years. Thanks!
