Later in the year my partner and I wish to spend 10 to 14 days in Italy, specifically a couple of days in rome and the rest exploring the Amalfi coast. We don't want to do a package thing as the ones we find all seem to be on a BB and dinner basis, and we'd like more options to explore the local cuisine.

Can anyone recommend what to do/see, where to stay? Would you stay in the one location on the Amalfi coast or maybe break it up with a couple of locations. Would it be worthwhile staying in Sorrento for a few nights and soaking up some rays?

We're on a budget so can't afford to stay anywhere too flash, so long as it's clean and not noisy it's ok. I don't thibk either of us would be too comfortable driving there so are places accessible easily by public transport?

Thanks to anyone who replies, I appreciate it.
