    Alrighty..

For those of you that are living abroad and have access to the tubes, here is a possible way of watching the rugby online, in decent TV quality. I got sick of watching it via the .tv sites and sorted this out for the Autumn internationals and HCup for myself.

You will need a decent internet connection, 2meg or better realistically.

I bought a UK VPN and Irish VPN connection online through a service provider.I used a particular vendor (will leave that out for now) but you can search the web for one and compare prices etc.

I bough the VPN rather than proxy so that I didnt have to use a web browser I could use other programs that werent proxy aware (sorry if this confuses anyone)

That allows me to catch BBC and RTE easily enough. You can buy per month or yearly so I bought yearly. If you want both RTE and BBC you need both an Irish and UK VPN connection

If you have a Sky subscription you can use that to use Sky Player online. Otherwise its about 30 quid a month for Sky Sports. You just need your viewing card number and postal code (UK) or telephone number if in Ireland. You can authorise up to 4 computers to use the Sky Player id.

    http://skyplayer.sky.com/vod/page/default/home.do

Now I don't know if you need both connections for RTE or if Sky stream it as part of their packages.

I watched the autumn internationals in perfect quality online on BBC1, BBC2 is not as sharp and RTE is the same as BBC 2. If you have TV2 Sumo (for those in Norway) you will know what the quality can be like.

I have a small media PC attached to my TV so I can use that to so the online streaming, tho it works on laptops etc etc It is also possible to make it work through the XBOX 360 but requires a bit more work and fiddling.

Anyways, what it means if you buy a VPN connection to the UK you can watch Sky/BBC and if you buy and Irish one, you can watch SKY/RTE online.

Its unbelievable that Norwegian TV is showing Six Nations games this year.
Great to see. When I lived there, I suffered a major drought of my sports for couch viewing.

Super post. Although I'll need to read it a few times after work as you have a lot of info there

It made my life easier.. especially with the cost of the VPN shared between a couple of us..

Now means I can watch the rugby happily up here for about 100€ a year, no satellite dish etc which is the pups nuts really

this is slightly off piste but perhaps you can advise me. i'm travelling by train tonight and have a new (work) i-pad that i'm hoping i can watch the game on. i'm told i need flash player which you cannot get on an i-pad.

    is this true? any solutions?

    thanks

search for "bbc tv" in the appstore, there are about 100, 90% of them free, some work better than others but best off trying a few. If you're on a train in ireland the 3g is hopeless, so best of luck if you're in the uk I know virgin have wifi for free on first class, which works surprisingly well.

You could download Skyfire from the Appstore. I'm not sure if it is free (It was when I got it) but you can stream live from the BBC (but not RTE as it thinks you're in the UK when you use it).

So does buying the VPN allow you to access blocked sites in particular countries.

I'm thinking specifically of gambling sites that I use in Ireland but can't use in France and Italy

For us expats in Asia, Setanta Asia is actually a very decent option for watching rugby online.

This year it will cover all 6N games, ML games, some English premiership & just recently added Super 15 to its rugby coverage. You also get all the GAA lashed in too.

Cost me under e50 for 12 months...

    Check out www.setanta.com/asia/

Justin, why not just report a post? It's far more helpful to us!
