My bike was robbed from Dublin city on Monday night at the bike racks beside the Molly Malone statue. 10 month old birthday present. Wondering where to look for it, I've been trying gumtree and buyandsell, I noticed 1 yard shop in the inner city that takes bikes for cash, is this the kind of place mine is gonna end up in?

anyway heres a description if anyone sees this for sale:
thick grey aluminum frame with dual suspension and dual disc brakes, 24 speed(nearly sure its 24!), the 24th gear isnt working properly-chain slips off

back disc brake doesnt release fully after being applied/kind of sticks a little

will try get the model details later if I can. It had a decent lock but the bike kind of stood out, used to get a lot of compliments on it. Now Im afraid to get a good bike again

Might be a good thread to throw in the idea that the safest place is Drury St car park. First floor is entirely laid out for bikes, and it's free, covered by CCTV etc. Either way, even within those confines, lock both wheels... to the frame and the bar.

Opening hours are 7AM to 1AM most days (I think).

As for your bike. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I would recommend you report it to the gards. One of the cycling in Dublin bloggy sites said the other day, rightly so, that not reporting it means it becomes an accepted norm.

thanks ye I reported just after it happened, found a guard on the street.

what would be a good lock? arent they all breakable tho? a bolt cutters can do the job or if its away from public a mini angle grinder breaks it in an instant. If I had known there were free secure areas to store it I'd be doing that all the time, dont mind a bit of a walk either

a homeless guy told me today that theres a good few bikes been stolen from beside the molly malone statue. I hope someone actually checks the cctv footage, its obviously a 'pro', they took the chain and lock with them and it's a busy area, bike was taken sometime before 11 and there was loads out.

No such thing as a 100% secure lock, but they always recommend using 2... 2 different ones at that!

Personally I have a kryptonite u-lock to lock the front wheel to the frame. Very hard to break and if they do it'd take an age and some good equipment. The back wheel I usually lock from the wheel, to the pole/rail/etc., then on to the frame itself. That one is a big thick chain lock, where the lock is built onto the chain itself. No separate lock with "weak spots".

Yeah this has been reported in recent weeks. With the rise in commuter cyclists and the fancy bikes around thanks to the bike2work scheme, theft has risen. It can't be eliminated completely but using 2 good locks and spending decent money on them will prevent disaster.

The recommended way to buy is to spend 10% of the bike cost on equipment to lock it. It's not a way for you to go spend more in the shops, it's a genuine system to buy a lock that befits the bike.

For the sake of the Gards, it's worth noting your serial and details, as well as having a pic of the bike so if one like yours does show up, you can identify it and prove it's yours (granted this is unlikely, sadly).

At least yours was taken on a busy street with plenty of CCTV coverage. If enough people report stolen bikes in the area, the Gards will take note and hang around a bit more from Store St./Pears St. stations... well, ideally anyway.
