Frightful Night

Well lads and ladies if any here, have to share this. Was out with the gear on foot lampin for an hour tonight. Seen eyes about 400 yds in the distance and decided to call for a while. After callin for about 10 mins on/off the red lad was comin in pretty quick, quicker than usual I might add. Only stopped once or twice as I had the light just under him pretty much showing him the way. Didn't want him gettin caught in briars now did I?:D Anyway. As he was within about 180-220 yds, as my usual protocol I always leave the light off for a few mins and decide to work the caller on its own and it usually works a treat for me so far with a few exceptions of course as there always are in this game.
Anyway, after about 5-6 mins on the caller, decided to lamp his route and the general area where I thought he was going to appear -/+ 30-40yds.
No sign, thought he had got my scent through a wind drift and scouted off like they do after such a suspicion, but no, shon around and behind me to see if any others had come close by, and F**K me....there he was, lown behold, about 4-5 yds from me lookin and without any stress or fear. I tell ya, was some shock to get, usually I would have expected it after 15 mins callin but after only a few mins I gotta admit I was spooked to say the least. That feelin in the dark alone, and I'm 6'3" and tippin 18stone.
He got me! But to finish, he surprised me so well I pretty much panicked and fumbled to get the gun up in time and he fec*ed off for himself.

Just curious folks if anyone here has had any experiences like this? I personally have not had the luck of gettin them in so close, after that I think I'll be lamping them all the way in.:D
I'm sure some you fellas must have some funny stories on here:P

Robert Bucknell, eat your heart out...

First time I went lamping with 2 of my friends, we had caller on and spotted a fox maybe 200 yards away. Turned the lamp off, I went prone for the shot and in the time it took me to lay down and shoulder the rifle the fox came in close enough that we could see him without the lamp sitting up in the dark about 10 yards away.

Another time we were lamping a farm near an isle with a river, pond full of duck and they farm sheep. There are lots of charlies here. We were watching one fox about 150 yards out and decided to scan around in case we were being stalked from behind. One of the lads swung the lamp and there about 2 strides away from me was a fox in full sprint. He was so close I flinched, was convinced he was going to run into me but once the lamp was on him he expertly rounded us and was gone. Scared the sh1te out of me.

Last time we went lamping, about 2-3 weeks ago at this stage, a fox came in so close he took up the full field of view in the scope. So close I was worried the shot would go over him. It didn't though. They were very eager in the cold weather.

That has happened us a few times we would be looking at one fox and trying to call him in and swing the lamp around and there is another within 30 yards!! We have got a few like that!! Never as close as Kay 9 but they are fairly hungary at the moment due to the cold weather!! I did miss one during the cold spell one day I was calling and he just ran straight at me I know now I should have shouted "stop"

couple of years ago I was lamping a field with my lamping mate when we positioned ourselfs on a grassy bank (or knoll) anyway,we called a fox and he was just sitting looking at us not budging, he was about 200 yrds away. we kept calling and he came a little closer but wasnt really interested so we took the lamp of him and waited to see what would happen. When I switched it back on again I flicked it downwards and low and behold at the base of the bank a fox was sitting watching us wondering "what the f..these lads where at" to say he scared the s..it out of us was an understatement. He must have been there for a while, his mate was still on the hill pacing along the top. we decided to leave well enough alone and went for a pint instead.

Was out at dawn calling foxes many years ago when I was still fairly inexperienced, spotted a vixen sitting out on a hillside well across a field, I settled into a hole in the briars along a large deep ditch, put the shotgun across my lap and started to call. I was calling for ages and the vixen just sat there, she seemed to be very interested in my calls but wouldn't budge. Next thing 3 half grown fox cubs burst out of the ditch literall 1 yard away.
Everyone jumped! I leapt into the air, the cubs sprung all over the place then scattered back into the ditch.
I don't know which was louder, my heart thumping or the sound of the cubs belting back through the briars.

The vixen just trotted back off along the ditch

about two years ago my father and myself turn into a field, got out of jeep with gun and lamp, the field was top of a valley lookin down for about four hundred yards and have had success there calling in foxes, so let the caller do its work on and off with it , still no eyes appering, this went on after ten or fifteen decide to leave, i turned around to see charlie sittin on his arse lookin at me, LAMP LAMP FOX was what i shouted as he took off to my right in a flash, dont know how my father picked him up as he headed down into the valley, dont ask me who or what from above helped me out that night but some how hit him while he was running full belt with a standing shot from a .17rem centerfire out at about 90yards. lady luck was on my side i think, on another ocasion calling foxes before dusk had one come behind me within about 6 feet on other side of low ditch, god he scared the **** out of me
