    Hi everybody,
Not sure if this is the correct section, I've a load of old junk from an office that I need to dispose of, basically a number of very old computers and cables etc.

Where is the best place for me to either dispose of these or take them for recycling ?

    Thanks in advance

Ok, you haven't told us where you are, this is relevant.

You should start by asking whoever handles waste management in your area. In some areas, the local council provides refuse collection, in other areas, the job is up to private companies. Your local waste managers will most likely have a drop off area for WEEE recycling, which is what your stuff is.

Nearly all bring centres have electrics/electronics sections, they take computers and all other types of electrical products, your local council website might be the first place to look.

Before you go dumping your computers you need to make sure that all info is off them, and its not as simple as wiping the hard drive... Dont know the ins and outs, but the last thing you want is someone picking up your old computer and resurecting company accounts or something!

If you bought new computer equipmemt and paid the WEEE fee you are entitled to bring the old equipment to your supplier and let him dispose of it (under certain conditions) Link.

This is a really useful post, like another poster I've some miscellaneous electronic stuff that I need to get rid of - obsolete external hard drives and so on. I take it that the recycling is as simple as just turning up with this stuff when the centre is open and just handing it over?

Nearly, you'll probably have to haul it out of your car yourself, and place in the appropriate skip/container.

You could consider posting your stuff on Freecycle (you will need to join the Yahoo group for your area, eg http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Galway_Ireland_Freecycle/ ) I have found that there are usually a few geeks (I use the term in the nicest sense!) interested in all sorts of cables and electronic doo dads for there latest project.
As mentioned before, make sure you completely clear and wipe any drives before handing to another party.

I've used these guys in the past - they will come to your premises and remove the equipment; securely destroy old hard discs, etc, if needed; and provide you with a certificate showing the waste has been properly disposed of. Very professional to deal with too. (Usual disclaimer - I've no connection with them other than as a satisfied customer.)

Dublin's Free Trade is another, similar option:
