A couple of years back loads of people here were buying their cars in the UK because of the savings. There was a mega thread here about it. What's the story now - have the cars worked out well? Any problem selling them on/trading them in?

We bought new in the North last year and tbh they were very pleasant to deal with and they delivered the car which was very good considering they didn't charge for the delivery. The car itself has been perfect. Quite happy overall.

Bar my very first car, every car i've owned has been a NI or UK import.
Never any trouble with sell on.

The exchange rate at present isnt very favourable (I'm looking) but they are still savings to be made

At the moment the only reason I can see to import would be because the same spec cannot be bought here. Car prices here generally are alot closer to imported prices than they were say 18 months ago.

The exchange rate as it stands, is the same as it was for most of last summer.

Its still very good compared to what it used to be, when I bought my car over there 2.5 years ago the exchange rate was something like 69p = 1 euro or worse I cant remember exactly, its 87p = 1 euro now.

An awful lot of the cars bought in the UK by Irish buyers were at similar exchange rates to mine.

There is a greater stock of cars in the uk. Is it a 80 million population there?

They tend to be higher spec cars

    Sterling is favourable

    Its worth a look

Im considering a trade in at the mo back to the place I bought from 2 years ago

Since last summer the price of Irish second hand cars has fallen, and the price of UK second hand cars has risen. Savings can still be had on some models, but some will be cheaper here with a bit of bargaining.

I agree, I was talking more about the exchange rate still being good rather than actual UK prices. There were good savings to be had back when I bought my car even with the weak euro, now as you said in a lot of cases you are better off buying here though there is still an odd bargain here and there in the UK.

I'd agree with that on cars I am looking at - 2008s is short supply in Ireland. Exchange rate probably needs to be 90c to make worthwhile too.

In his case because is living and working over in London is he not exempt from VRT or will be paying a much reduce VRT levy because he can prove to the Revenue that he is resident in London for the last 4 years?
