Hi,im really set on doing arts in maynooth..i want to do music as a major and possibly english/history as a minor

im confident i can pass any music test requirement for entry (if there is one im not too sure)

but i really doubt ill get the points so..

if i dont get the points is there any year courses i could take to ensure my place for the arts the following year? or will i just have to repeat the leaving and hope for the best...

i know its early days but i expect the points to shoot up

Hey, I don't really understand your question.

You want to apply for a music course? Or do you want to apply for an Arts course?

I don't think you can take music as an arts subject, if that's what you're asking?

    sorry,messy question!

im gonna be gettin my leavin cert results this august, and arts in maynooth is at the top of my cao...

but i dont think ill get enough points for it

so instead of repeating the whole leaving cert again,is there any courses i can do for just one year like a level 6 or 7,that would let me into the arts course in maynooth?

(i think i made my question in my first post a bit awkward to answer by sayin that i want music as a major in the arts)

You'd need to contact the admissions office of the university to ask that. Non-CAO admissions are not something anyone here would be able to help you with I'd imagine.

Oh, and you can do music through arts. :)

What about the Bmus course MH103, you don't need points for that.
    Just Assessment test + Interview/Audition

    Yup.

And, if you're like my old housemate, you can just write them a nice letter telling them how much you like 'stuff' even if you failed the audition!

Although, can't see that working these days. Sound department though. Come on in leaps and bounds in the last 18 months.

With the new Prof. no amunt of letter writing will get you in if you don't pass the audition, and even with a the 2nd or 1st class honours you cannot transfer from Ba music into Bmus after 1st year. Ba students miss out on too much to be able to catch up apparently. Tis a bugger, but I understand where she was coming from!

Anyway OP, you could do the arts coure in Dunboyne, or you could do something like the music foundation course in D.I.T and then into Bmus there or Maynooth.

Haven't heard it myself, but I'd believe it.

    ???

I know of two lads who transfered over to 2nd year BMus from Arts...however that was just before the new course.

I know of people in 3rd year who still can't write a suspension...There are definately people in BMus that shouldn't be tere and Vise versa in ALL years.

I'd say this is taken on a case by case basis. I personally know someone who is well on his way to a transfer, but he could probably lecture in some of the theory based modules, so he is in a strong position.

I also know of at least one student who plans to transfer in the other direction as he loves his second subject so much. If a willing and capable student wants that place, surely it would be given to them.

I asked both a lecturer at the introductory lecture at the start of term and the Professor at a later stage. Sorry man, I know you really wanted to transfer, and so did I, but from everything I've asked and been told, it just ain't going to happen :(:(:(

I'd still say try your luck. You need to be very strong in assignments and exams though, and show very regular attendance. They may well take you in on a case-by-case basis.

Guys, I will stress as well that you are NOT at a disadvantage if you do music through arts. Some very talented people doing Arts.

For example, in 2007/08 year, the only person to get a first in performance (80 something!!!) was an Arts student.

    Really??

I started in arts doing music and maths and then went back a year to change to BMUS and catch up on what I missed but was so worth it. The Music dept in Maynooth is brilliant.

If you don't get enough points for arts you should apply for BMUS as well. BMUS is interview and entrance exam based but points for Arts go up and down every year anyway it's only based on the lowest points admitted from the previous year afaik!

On getting into college if you don't get the points, there are loads of options.
There is a course called Liberal Arts, this is run in both Rathmines College (http://www.rathminescollege.ie/courses.php?id=23) and in the Liberties(http://libertiescollege.ie/pages/Department%20of%20Adult%20Education/Liberal%20Arts%20-%20Access%20to%20University.htm)
I did the course in Rathmines last year and it was the best decision I have made in my life! I had so much fun and it was a brilliant course. I missed arts in maynooth by 5 points, but I was lucky to go up in rechecks. I still completed the course though!
I know loads of people are now in the University they wanted to be in, (UCD mainly but there are 4 or 5 people in Maynooth) because of the course.
    It's well worth checking out.
let me know if you choose to go there!

hi .... Is it hard to get accpeted for Music at Maynooth? I did the interview and I'm soooo worried incase I don't get in cos I reeeeeeeeeeeally want to go there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,214 ✭✭✭wonton

The standard has deffinitely gone up in the past two years and with the general rise in college applicants i'd say its quite hard to get in.

but as said already if you get into arts and do music, it wouldnt make a HUGE difference as you still do many of the same modules especially in 2nd and 3rd year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

I know its incredibly hard playing the waiting game, but you'll know with plenty of time to spare and change around your CAO.

I echo what wanton says, if you don't get BMus, go for arts. Some of the best musicians in teh dept. (past and present) are/were arts students. You will NOT be at any disadvantage.

Anyway, pointless discourse till you find you if you got in. Just be patient! :) Good luck!

You usually get a letter of confirmation around the end of May, when I was in 6th year I got one on the morning after my Graduation ceremony, so it lifted my hangover mood considerably =)

23rd of may to be exact

Ahh cool! Thanks a mil! Really hope I get it before June anyway =] How many places are there on average just for the Bmus?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,214 ✭✭✭wonton

It seems to be a bit varied in numbers, id say around 35 average but its prob more to do with how many people really impressed them in the interviews than anything else.

what kinda stuff did you tell them you were interested in?

any idea who done your interview?

They normally only accept around 30 people into the B Mus class our year had 35 due to people going abroad for a year and a few of us changing from arts to B Mus.
But that's the thing even if you don't get it in first year you can still do music through arts and then try at the end of first year to change over to the pure music course. I changed at the end of second year to pure music and repeated second year to pick up the modules I'd missed that B Mus did and arts didn't but it was totally worth it and loved every minute of it :)

41 in 2nd bmus with maybe 4 repeaters.

Petals i'm almost certain the new head of department has put an end to switching between arts and bmus.

I played quite well but I don't think my interview went well cos I didn't tlk about what I knlw about so stupid ! I sd a few good things tho . . . I hope umm there was 2 guys called Anontio and Adrian and I forget their surnames.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

    ooooooooo........not an easy interview.

They're lovely guys (and in my opinion, excellent lecturers), but not exactly.......welcoming to a nervous prosopective first year. On the other hand, Antonio is the performance lecturer, so if you felt confident in your performance, thats a plus! :)

Good luck, and tell us how you do!
