If I was to get the new 523i I'd only pay €630 per year instead of the €935 I'm currently paying on an 05 523i.

Great advances in emissions in a few years!
More BHP from the engine too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,261 ✭✭✭robbie99

Even better is why settle for the 523i when you can have the 528i at the same rate of tax?

They will when the new model comes in.

    BMW M5 is 348 g/km so band G, too. (500 bhp)

The X5 is also in band G to my knowledge. Couldn't find any figures on it, depends on the engine obviously.

Keeping going & do the 1 Series & X Models. Is the 535d still available?

The 330d looks a very attractive power/tax ratio. Still don't know if I'd switch to the devils juice though.

Sorted :). But most people interested in the Ms or X5s aren't interested in what tax band they lie.

No. You can get the X5 with various engines:
    - 3.0 L 225 hp I6
    - 4.4 L 286 HP (2000–2003) 315 HP (2004–2006) hp V8
    - 4.6 L 347 hp V8
    - 4.8 L 355 hp (264.7 kw) @ 6200 rpm V8
    - 3.0 L 193/218 hp I6 Diesel

Its the Sport model 0.60 8.8 seconds

The 3.0 oil burners look very tempting at 447.

Now if only the purchase prices would drop to 40% like the road tax.

I assume this is knocking the prices of old big engine beemers with big tax.

318d is changing to VRT band A for manual gearbox.

318d AND 320d automatics will also be changing to VRT band B.

Oh and the 320d and 325d are both gaining 7 extra horses too(no sign of a 323d any time soon if they've just updated the 325d then).

That means these 3 models will soon be down a VRT band.

Hard to make the case for the new 523i when the 520d has only 20 hp less but is in band B for both manual and auto while the 523i is in band E. The auto(which 19 out of every 20 buying the new one will be choosing apparently) 523i is slower from 0-60 than the 520d (by 0.2s) and a whole second slower than the 525d even though both have 204 hp.

The 528i has 258 hp which is more than the 530d(at 245 hp) but even so the 530d is 0.4s faster to 60 with the auto(6.3 s). I love the sound of a straight 6 petrol BMW and if they were in the same VRT band as the 6 cyl diesels my heart would want the petrol and in the UK with no VRT the 528i is the same price as the 525d but is 0.7s faster to 60 so if the 6 cyls were in the same VRT band then yes I probably would go for the petrol(I refuse to buy the entry level version of any car unless it is something really special so would never buy the 520d even though I can see why many do) but we're not; the higher VRT of the petrols means that they will be dearer than the diesels and ~45 mpg rather than ~37/38 mpg as well as diesel being cheaper means that you would really want to be a complete sadist to choose petrol with the new car.

Much easier to make a case for a proper big engined 3.0 litre diesel(over a lowly 520d) with an automatic now though, €447 road tax for either gearbox:D:D.

I'd hate to be someone with an 07 525d or 530d paying €1230 road tax when the same car in the new model is only €447:eek::D.

    I pay 280 a year on my 2008 2.0 118i M Sport. :) I love BMW's Co2 outputs. They are so low. We had a 2008 1.4 Auris and it was 385.

Are you still delighted when running on 3 cylinders, due to another bloody coil going?

I drive her softly. I only ever really open her up on the straight lines.

I've never had a problem with them thank god. I owned a 2002 318i and this one....touch wood.

I read on this problem quite a lot. A survey was done. The problem could be a combination of crap fuel and going to hard when cold.

I keep her well under 2000 revs in the mornings. Maybe thats why I never get the problem. I know people who have though. Its a massive pain in the ass. And if you take it to an independent and don't know about coils it can be a very painful exercise. I'm just glad I don't have one of them Diesels. The problems they talk about on the forums is unreal. 100s of different problems.

Your bands look to be about 2 years out of date. A 177 320d is E270/annum and not E156.

Yes it is, currently trying to sell my 06 330i and proving rather difficult as Motor Tax would drop to less then half the price if Co2 was to be used.

Considering the OP posted it in 2010 then I'd imagine it is 2 years out ;)

    Yep:
    BMW 535d M Sport Saloon

    Automatic Gearbox
    Diesel 230 kW [313 hp]
    50.4 mpg
    Emissions: 148.0 g/km
That would put it in Tax Band C, along side the 318i!

For max abuse of the CO2 bands though, the LHD market only AWD 550d cannot be beat:
Figures for BMW M 550d xDrive

The M genes are borne out by performance figures: 381bhp and 740 Nm catapult the BMW M550d xDrive from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

    Fuel consumption
    Combined: 6.4 l/100 km (44mpg)
    Urban: 7.2 l/100 km
    Extra-urban: 6.0 l/100 km
    CO2 emissions combined: 169 g/km
    Tax band D, same as a 320i...

From what I can read on line, and from various friends and family owners, I've seen more problems with the ED petrol engines than diesels.
